High TL minaturizaiton (of ship components)

Hey folks sorry I'm at work and don't have access to my books when I was trying to figure this out.

I recall that in classic Traveller higher TL opened the way for higher capacity drives.

However even with High Guard I do not recall when lower drive ratings ever got more efficient?

Was this ever addressed in classic (or is this in MegaTraveller? Mongoose? 2300?) I can check when I get home of course :)

Cheers!

HG does miniaturization of armor and power plants, which allows more protection and/or stuff mounted on the same size hull.

In a sense you could say the increasing power of bay and spinal weapons in the same form factor is a form of miniaturization.

However, you dont get the kind of technological jumps one sees between say TL4 and TL6.

I was trying to make a viable far trader Jump 2 (or better) and still on a 200 ton hull. So a TL 15 Jump 2 drive for example masses less than TL10? I must have forgotten, will re-read when I get home thanks!

No- the J-drives and M-drives do not shrink, just the power plant.

The mix between CT and HG ships are different, I think you get a few tons back on the lower PP fuel requirements.

Ah...gotcha...I recalled the PP stuff...just didn't recall about M and J drives. Granted...it's fuel that really sucks up space....hurm...MegaT or house rule time then :)

In MgT (at least 1st edition) HG you can build smaller J-drives and M-drives too at higher TLs... at a higher price, of course.

traveller 5 offers performance/cost/volume efficiency by TL
have fun
Selandia

I kickstarted T5 (lost my Patent of Nobility though :( ) it's just too crunchy for my group. We're looking for something a bit more...well little black bookish or JTAS :) Thanks though. I will read through it and see if I de-crunchy it a bit at least it's a place to start. Will also check Mongoose's version.

There was an article I read many years ago that covered this. It was either Ares Magazine or the Dragon Magazine Ares inserts(I think, getting old sucks).

I have the drag mags, I will try to make the time to flip through them.

I have no clue what year it was. Danged Sometimers.

Found it!!(new I wasn't that decrepit yet) An article by James Collins in the Ares section of Dragon magazine #108, (April 1986) p. 78.

Assigns a Tech Level Change Factor of ten percent per level above the introductory TL. Lists subjects such as price, mass, ect. and the TLCF may applied to one category or a couple.

I have been thinking of using a different design sequence for military ships, where their drives are half of the volume, but cost twice as much as civilian drives. This would give a greater difference between military and civilian ships, along with making military ships more expensive, which would be more accurate.

That is not quite the same as what you are trying to do, but it would be another approach.
