HIWG CD at Traveller Freeport

Zparkz

SOC-12
I have made the content of the HIWG CD available from my site, Traveller Freeport, for download. Everything is collected in a zip-file almost 200MB in size. Totally the content is about 600MB of HIWG material.

Visit www.travellerfreeport.com to download the content.
Note: You need a BitTorrent client to download the material.

A question and a point.

What is HIWG?

A competent computer operator/hacker can indeed access your entire computer through BitTorrent... regardless of what is claimed.

I get faster download speeds without BitTorrent. With it I'm getting a mere handful of kb/sec. (peak was 15... I get 40 typically without it).

HIWG stands for History of the Imperium Working Group. A loosely organized and international group of Travelelr fans that shared their ideas.

Aramis: For some reason my router won't forward the port properly. However, a friend of mine, who downloaded the file from me first got speeds up to 119Kb/s. I am not sure why things go slow now, even with three seeders.

I would have used direct download, but the file will take up too much of my server space and probably eat into my alloted bandwith as well.

One of the seeds is down here on the back end of down-under. For anyone on this side of the pond it will help, but for anyone in the rest of the world, not so much. I'm pushing out at about 17 kbps.

Bittorrent is used less for speed of download and more to keep people like Zparks pipe from melting. With more people in the swarm you would actually see some decent speed though.

I suspect also that some ISP's strangle BitTorrent traffic. A few years ago I usually got far better speeds on BT than I do today. I'll try to buy a new router next year. The firmware on my current seems to be a bit dated.

Yeah, I keep pretty well locked down at home and at work. And since BT requires inbound connections to be enableds... oh well... :(

Thanks for this...I lost my copy of the CD ROM in a move along with my Spanish Traveller and DGP lost catalogue plus bonus material...your work truly was amazing in the heyday and even more amazing now.

I can hardly wait until I get home to start downloading it...

As a christmass present I have uploaded the entire file to my site. The HIWG CD is now available as download for those who has experienced difficulties with the BitTorrent download. I'll keep the file available for direct download for at least 2 weeks, depending on how much it eats off my monthly quota of band width.

Well, Merry Christmas to you!

I wasn't going to bother with the BitTorrent, but, heck, if you're going to make it easy, I'm in!

Thanks!

Thanks very much! Now just explain how to get the best out of it - what are all these files with no recognised extensions? How do I open them?

Can I have permission to park it on my site for download? My bandwidth quota is in the GB per month, and we're most of the way to next month, so I can offer a chunk of bandwidth and a semi-permanent home for these files on scottmartin.ca for as long as you'd like them available.

I'm currently doing this for several of the Signal GK reprints...

I'm tempted to convert the fanzines (Alien Realms and Starships, Starports and Vehicles included in WordPerfect format) to PDF and host 'em.

Does anyone have a good sense of the redistribution restrictions associated with the bulk of the HIWG content? I'm guessing much of it dates from the "olden days" of the 'net before anyone worried about such things.

The Meshan Saga PDFs in the archive explicitly state "Duplication or inclusion of any material presented in this publication is forbidden without the express permission of the copyright holders." which I suspect is more intended to prevent stealing content rather than restricting the distribution of the overall fanzine.

Sure, you may host the file. I got a quota of 5000MB month and prior to uploading the file I had only used little more than 200 or so. Now I have used more than half, and the file has been downloaded 16 times over BitTorrent and 25 times as direct download.

Mind if I put a copy on my site too?

My bandwidth allowance is close to 6000 GB/month, and I currently use less than 1 GB/month. The allowance keeps growing too, thanks to the hosting company's loyalty scheme.

I've had the actual CD for a few years now, and have found it rather useful. :)

Sure, feel free to put the content up. Maybe we should link to each others sites just in case?

Note that the HIWG CD I am hosting is a compilation from two HIWG CD's I got from Bryan Borich I think. At least one of them I got from him. The other I am not sure. I compiled the files into one CD.
