I find this whole series of events to be highly suspect, incredulous and uncredible.

  1. No-one hears from Hunter for months (his last actual post on these boards was 12 April 2008);
  2. People have been asking where he is for months, with Mods only being able to give "we're trying" answers;
  3. People have been ordering products, paying for them and not receiving them;
  4. Others are owed money in respect of works completed;
yet Hunter considers my sig to be so massively more important than any of the above items, that he can stop doing whatever it is that is keeping him away from his business to PM me and someone else an infraction?

I ask in all seriousness now: am I (and/or my board) that much of a serious, sustained threat here?

I must say I'm a little disappointed with this series of unfortunate events. I've just been to SFRPG yet but it seems like a general forum for SF gamers (ok the Traveller section is the biggest and most active but it looks like most everyone there are CotI members or former members). It seems almost like this place is imploding on itself with so many long term and valuable contributors being slapped in the face. :toast:

I must ask one question though, if other forums are such a bad thing why does this site carry links (many posted by Hunter himself) to so many other Traveller forums (too many to list)? :confused:

It's not that links to other sites are the problem, it's the manner in which they are presented. And I'll repeat I think Gruffty's (previous) sig link was more a misunderstanding than a blatant rule breaker but that was (apparently) the perception of it by some, and so the problem. And I see no problem with the current one. OK, strike that, he's changed it again and yes that version is probably going to be a problem.

As for the rest I don't feel I can say except that I've been given some small hope despite (and not because of or related to) the oddness of this case.

(EDIT: I hope that doesn't sound like I'm "in the loop but only dropping hints" as I didn't mean it like that. I'm pretty much as clueless as the majority here and just reading between the lines.)

To answer a relatively minor point from this (now locked) thread:

1) you're wrong about it not bothering others. Someone had pointed it out to me already, and I was going to pursue it today anyway.
Oddly enough, no-one PMd me to say "Gruffty, I think your sig is out of order, can you change it before I spin a PM to a Mod about it". Where I work (the UK's NHS) if you have an issue with someone (i.e. you don't like something they've said or done) you take it to that person first and ask them to stop; if that doesn't work, then you take it to the higher-ups. This is how I perceive reasonable people to think and act: do you have a problem with me or something I've said/done? Then communicate with me, first, before doing anything else. Thank you.

Gruffty's public reaction is understandable (but inappropriate)
I don't consider my post to be inappropriate at all. I need to answer this clearly, so that no-one is misled about this or misunderstands where I'm coming from:

I tried to PM Hunter about the infraction as soon as I had read the PM about it; when I hit the send button I got this:
The following errors occurred with your submission:
1. hunter has chosen not to receive private messages or may not be allowed to receive private messages. Therefore you may not send your message to him/her.

If you are trying to send this message to multiple recipients, remove hunter from the recipient list and send the message again.
Why did I try to PM Hunter? Because I act as I described above: Hunter issued me with an infraction, therefore the first person I should speak to about it is ... can you guess who that might be? ... you got it: Hunter. But I couldn't send the PM, so I had to find another route.

As I could not PM Hunter about the infraction, I composed (what I consider to be) a carefully thought out, rational and (relatively) unemotive post. I placed it in a thread that appeared to have a great deal of correlation with my issues (i.e. this thread, as another, more pertinent, thread is now locked), in the hope that Hunter would see it and respond by either posting there or by PM (PM would be - and still is - the preferred method).

Along the way, whilst thinking about the whole PM/infraction situation, I worked through the possibilities of what may or may not have happened behind the scenes to get that PM sent to me. This is where the "options" came from.

I hope the above clarifies things for everyone, members, Mods and Admins all.

My signature.

  1. Someone questioned the phrasing of one of my previous sigs in a post hereabouts.
  2. I PMd them to find out what their specific problem was with the sig.
  3. They PMd me back with an explanation of their views and what they perceived could be issues with my sig.
  4. I changed my sig as a result of the feedback.
That is how civil people behave towards each other - no unexplained PMs, no infractions.

Thank you, Dan :)

I made contact with Hunter last night, and yes, anything that seemed to have been done by him was.

He is trying to catch up with a backlog of work.

Gruffty, if you weren't warned first then I'm sorry, you should have been.

Thank you for the independent verification that it was, in fact, Hunter who PMd/infracted (is that a real word?) me.

Never ;)

Thank you for the apology Andrew but it should not have had to come from you on that aspect of events.

We now have confirmation that Hunter is around and about, to some (most probably lesser) degree.
