I think I Need a New Hobby

Lord, but I've been playing these games for a long time. Since 1979. I love role playing, especially a few of my old friends such as Traveller, 1st Edition AD&D, Pendragon, Boot Hill, Privateers and Gentlemen, FASA Star Trek, TSR Conan and etc. But I don't seem to connect with the new crop of players. All they want is Pathfinder or D&D 4E or Star Wars: Saga Edition.... Maybe I'm just getting old.

I just moved to a new area (Fort Myers, FL) and advertised for players... No bites. Not one. Traveller may as well be a dead fish for all of the interest I've been able to generate.

Maybe its time for a new hobby....

Go to a big con like Origins or GenCon. If you're willing to GM, you can get in for free and have so many people interested that you have to turn some away.

FInd a local game store with gaming room. Advertise a sample game night and see who shows up to check it out.

The concept of ALL the rules (Traveller LBBs) on a single disk will appeal to a lot of cash strapped players. In this day of Bi yearly rules changes to generate cash and expensive supplements this may have a lot going for it.

Try and get them more into RPGing via, atmosphere, genre and such.

Explain that rule sets are not as important and the gameplay.

Good luck.

My advice is don't get too hung up on game systems. (not the place to say that) Learn a few new tricks and try to mold it so it is closer to what you want. Also try to find new players don't try to play too often there are probably quite a few players like me who would love to play but really more than once every two weeks is no go. I simply have too many other responsibilities with my family and as a homeowner.

The most fun I had in recent memory playing was playing spirit of the century modified for vintage sci fi. In the end have fun at it and well read a few more books etc while you wait.

My Pathfinder campaign has become the "gateway drug" for my Traveller and OD&D campaigns. ;) I got three new people to the table that way.

Pathfinder is the best version of D20 I've found so far. Personally, as I ran it I got to like it better and better. I leave out some of the rules to help it play lighter and faster. Presently, I'd rather run it than AD&D (1st or 2nd). YMMV. ;)

You might also try advertising on the basis of your campaign, rather than the rules you're using.

Another approach is joining someone else's campaign of whatever so folks get to know you. In my case, I'll _play_ almost anything but only run certain things. Heck, I've even played WarHammer and WH40K. Not my cup of tea, but once folks got to know me I'd start telling Traveller and OD&D stories that got people interested.

If all else fails, try this for a new hobby: http://saundby.com/cnc/
