If Traveller ships were to look like this......

Apologizes in advance if this is in the wrong place
(I didn't think it would qualify for the gallery as I did not draw this myself, I only found it, over Here )

I saw this and thought.....

Empress Marava:
Far Trader

Seeing the small section up front in the middle reminded me of a semi-truck cab, which got me to thinking... trucks in space.

Similar to the battle-rider concept and SDB jump shuttle, but could a system of small jump-drive ships hook up to large space-worthy cargo containers be a viable shipping method in Traveller? Or is the huge jump fuel requirements be that prohibitive to such a system?

Heh, could make for a competition to see who can come up with the most economical system/cab to cargo-container relationship, if the idea works at all. :)

(starts thinking of designs....)

That reminded me of the Air Raft,

And your idea, in CT, not sure, but it could work with Mongoose Traveller if you use the Anti matter power plant option, can't see why not,

It would be a good idea though, you have a Jump 1 ship, and are stuck in the same loop of planets and need a jump 2+ to reach new ground,

you hire the massive Jump sled to carry your ship to a new sector,
that could make alot of money, and adventure to boot,

Sorta Renta Jump Drive, "We're in it for the long haul"

Oh man, a few minor tweaks, and that would be the coolest Marava EVER! Remove that cockpit thing in the center and the front pair of turrets, then maybe make the prong "front windows" a touch larger. Yeah, I could get behind this look way more than some of the recent MgT or T4 art.

It so reminds me of some of the old Dietrick art in CT and MT. I love that "realistic" looking stuff.

If Mongoose (or T5 or any Traveller edition) adopted this type of style, I'd be completely behind it.

To me, that is so much more interesting than the comic-booky-super-hero look that MGT is going for.

Ditto, theres a level of maturity in that design thats refreshing,
I would also buy the Traveller book that could follow that sort of look,

Looks a lot like the "Armor" class from the first few episodes of Macross/Robotech.

My comment exactly. Still, it is a nice perspective draft of the vessel.

I have to admit that I've never cared much for some of the asthetics of a lot of Traveller ships. But that's just me.

It looks like a tug, to me. The cockpit looks to me as if it's its own ship docked with the bigger vessel.

The freighter's standard bridge is that glass we see dorsal and aft.

I like the rockets/engines that fire from the bow, suggesting real-life space travel (need thrusters facing all directions).

The four circular projects on the edges of the dorsal section look to me to be pop-up missile launchers or some other type of weapon.

On the port side, that looks to me to be a large hangar door that will open to the ship's cargo bay when the vessel makes berth.

I see some maneuvering thrusters--a cluster of three--just dorsal and aft of the cargo door.

The worker bee tuck seems to have some manipulators folded against its hull on the bow.

Judging by the cockpit on the worker bee docked on the bow, I wouldn't say the ship is that big. Those could be shadows of helmets in the cockpit--a pilot and navigator sitting behind him. That worker bee should be about the size of an F-14 fighter.

Great design work! Oddly enough this is reminds me of the Gazelle I'm building for the 2010 Traveller Calendar.

Not in overall shape, but in that masculine, chunky look. Inspirational stuff PathfinderAP, thanks for posting :-)

That is where the Empress Marava has its air-raft & forward cargo ramp, so this is just an external-carriage ships' launch rather than the standard internal-carriage.

Yep, that's the bridge all right. Since the Marava's is superseded by the retros, that's a decent place to mount it.

No problem, I like your "Golden Groat" ship, should look great when its got some detail/skin on ;)

Alien-Buck Rogers

I see a bit of Ron Cobb (Alien) and Robert McCall (Buck Rogers in the 25th Century) in that ship but far from saying such would be a bad thing.

I like it. I think this is the look that Mongoose is rightly emulating for its Starships and Vehicles. One of my first loves has always been the Atlas of the Imperium cover for it summed up what would be meant by First Survey...and I don't think that ship was ever stat'ed or identified.

Traveller art is improving but ever so slowly. I only wish that copyright and/or Fair Use could be laxed more for us to share and thus inspire the artists further. Nevertheless, we can hope that T5 does have people contacting artists like these so that they may indeed come to be identified with Traveller.

<Hint Hint>DonM, who does Marc have in charge of the art </Hint>
