Isn't the main Imperial colour just black on a background (or yellow on black)?
It seems logical to me that sectors or even smaller subdivisions would have their own colours/flags (the US states all have their own flags, even though they're part of the USA).

Doesn't the Spinward Marches have a unicorn symbol, and Vland a ring-like symbol? (with the Spinward Marches colour being a blue background with red (?) in the foreground?)

Those were chosen after the Rebellion had started. The Unicorn was a symbol of House Aledon. Vland's symbol was the Vilani Chaplet, symbol of the First Imperium and not used under the Thrid Imperium.
All the unit markers on military maps (5FW and IE) display black on a red background (or white on red for colonials). That works for me for most situations ... though in my version of the standard IN uniform I did make it yellow on black on a red or white uniform.
