Imperial Navy uniform

Everyone knows these are Imperial Scout Service uniforms:

I could have sworn those were MoJ agents on an anti-smuggling task force :D

There is an alternate model for Imperial Navy Uniforms. I don't think this applies to the OTU but it might be useful "Age of Sail" based ATUs.

Officers provide their uniforms by private purchase. Uniforms are tailored according to an approved pattern but can vary greatly based on the Soc of the wearer.

Other ranks are provided with a dress uniform by the ship's captain and the pattern, colors and style are based on his/her personal preference. Working dress in purchased from ships stores and is bought or manufactured by the navy in bulk. Crew members with any skill in tailoring become very popular under this model.

Vacc Suits are provided in the same manner. Since they must be tailored to the wearer Officers provide their own by private purchase while other ranks have to make do with a limited range of sizes and must use bungie cords, padding and putty to make them fit safely.

Not for the OTU Navy perhaps but it might be the model followed by Pirates and other organizations.

Well, maybe, but, if you follow any American TV or Hollywood movie you know ALL undercover teams are paired, one white guy and one black guy. This is almost without exception! ;)

This let's us know that they are the good guys right off and let's us realize the crooks aren't to smart as they seem to always take the paired undercover cops right into their innermost workings... :D

Without this trope we would be hopelessly confused.

Can't think of any recent shows with undercover teams, but for crimebusting teams there's Bones, Burn Notice, Castle, Monk, Numbers, White Collar, The Closer, The Mentalist, NCIS, JAG, none of which follow that pattern. In fact, I can't think of any recent show with a salt n' pepper[*] team, though there must be lots of shows I haven't seen.

[*] Hopefully not an offensive term; I don't mean for it to be, anyway. I got it out of some crime novel I don't remember.

In the Classic Era it's always a Solomani and a Vilani. ;)

Hans, I'd have hoped Danish TV would be better, at least enough so that you didn't have to watch Hollywood...:(

In my latest Traveller game, the PC's are active duty Scouts on exploration duty in the Fulani Sector. The standard uniforms are like the 2nd & 3rd season uniforms from Seaquest w/a red stripe & Starburst on the rightside to the waist.Been fun looking up pics of the Seaquest uniforms since two of my players never saw the series(a 20 year old & his 12 year old brother, who are the sons of 2 of my players{their Mom haddn't seen the series eather. }).

Interesting WarriorKnight. I pattern my Imperial Navy working dress after the Seaquest jumpsuits/overalls including the rollneck underneath in the various branch colors.

Seaquest is a great for atmosphere on a starship.

I just googled it and they do seem pretty workable.

One thing though (just observing) The pics, at least of the character group, shows the "traditional" women's uniform. Lots of leg (Men in long pants, but, women in short shorts...) Then there is cleavage (I have nothing against cleavage!) Even though the blouse zipper goes to the neck it is worn low, real low. Trope trope trope...;)

I'm not sure which particular image you're looking at Vladika but this is the image I had in my head, the season 1 uniform:

Season1cast.jpg

Everyone on normal duties wore the same jumpsuit. I hesitate to use the word unisex because to fit properly there has to be a difference in tailoring between the sexes. Seaquest DSV was one of those shows that suffered a lot of network tinkering and definitely got "sexier" as the seasons went along.

As for women in shorts, well it was an ocean research vehicle so shorts for men and women were practical, so were wet suits. I think even Chief Crocker was in shorts at times :nonono:

Another interesting aspect was that the sub was a military vessel (Navy crew in Naval uniforms) with scientific research staff from the UN who had their own color working dress and civilian consultants in "normal" clothes.

For ideas on scouts, navy, belters and the relationship between the Imperium and local worlds (UEO versus coastal nations and undersea microstates) its full of ideas

That's definitely a different one. I'll have to learn how to post a pic and then I'll post the one I saw.

Still, either uniform seems pretty practical.

use or [imgw=400]imageurl[/imgw] (if it's big).

OK On looking at a bigger blowup these are wet suits, but the point is made; shorts on women long on men & zipper down for cleavage on women and at the neck for men.

I used to Dive, and whatever wetsuit would be needed for a particular sea condition would apply to both men and women.

Again, not complaining, just observing the Trope.

Oh you just reminded me of Heinlein's Number of the Beast where the crew of Lazarus's starship/timeship from the far future do nail the unisex bit, but by wearing whispy little clouds in pastel colors that float around their anatomical features. Not really practical for doing maintenance but at around TL27 who gets grease on their hands anymore?

On my browser it shows just fine... Is anyone else having problems with it or did it need some "admin" adjustment?

I cannot see either of the images posted in messages, but found it by following the link in my browser.

Yes, definite inequality in wetsuits. ;)

Hi,

As Aramis noted the site does not appear to allow for direct links of images, but I copied and pasted the info from Vladika's initial post (and deleted a bit of extraneous text) and posted the hyperlink in my previous post. I think that hyperlink should take you to what Vladika was trying to show. :)

Thanks. I'm wondering now if it doesn't show up fine on my browser because its in my cookies... Curious. I'll start posting the link in the future to avoid this confusion. (It'll obviously be awhile before I try for aramis's job! :D )
