Actually, BlackBat, the documents just released by the CIA (the "Family Jewels") show the CIA gave poison pills to two mobsters to try and poison Castro early on. Interestingly, the government did get back the pills....

At times these will act as "ninjas" during feuds between nobles. Using them is often easier then using normal employees of a given noble who might be respectable people who wish to stay respectable. And a noble might not want a bad reputation to come on himself, his family, or his servants. So he would use "a lot of buffers".

Huh, I have never really considered this.
