Inkaalur-class Dreadnought (?)

I am intrigued by a warship detailed in High Passage 2: the Inkaalur-class "dreadnought," a 100,000 dt TL 14 ship that was "the mainstay of the line of battle in the rimward Imperial fleets." Later text suggests the ship was used in the Solomani Rim War.

The CT Supplement 9 definition of battleships: "jump-capable vessels which are, due to their armament and protection, capable of standing in the line of battle. While battleships (or, as they are often called, dreadnaughts [sic]) generally have little better in the way of primary armament than cruisers, their extensive secondary batteries render them virtually immune to missile and small craft attack while their bulk provides a tremendous ability to absorb damage and keep fighting."

So 100,000 dt is sometimes cited as the upper limit of what constitutes a cruiser. I can't find a canonical example of a battleship that small, but let's say that 100,000 is about the lower limit -- at this point the distinction between a "battlecruiser," and a "light battleship" is probably fairly slight. Against a TL 13 foe, a TL 14 100,000 dt ship might well seem a dreadnought; against a TL 15 the same ship might seem a cruiser.

In the context of the Solomani Rim War, where the Confederation Navy was somewhere between TL 13 and TL 14, could the Inkaalur-class conceivably stand in the line of battle?

They'd be facing hundred kay tech level twelve/thirteen battlecruisers, one fifty kay tech level thirteen battlecruisers, and if they're unlucky, quarter mil tech level fourteen fast dreadnought.

Why not?

It would carry the same spinal weapon and be just as difficult to kill as a 75 kT or a 750 kT ship.

A smaller ship would be more difficult to hit, so more difficult to kill.

I found a note to myself that Clay Bush had updated the Inkaalur to MegaTraveller. I assume this appeared in a HIWG document or fanzine? Anyone recall?

So it is fanon not canon?

The perennial problem of third party authors making sweeping statements like 'the mainstay of the Imperial fleet to rimward'.

Despite the fact that at the time Imperial doctrine was to use battle riders and tenders - see I:E, CT S:9 and SMC - as the main line of battle ships.

A 100,000t TL14 dreadnaught - nope, can't see it. 500000t possibly in order to mount the biggest spinal, armour 14, maximum screens and agility 6.

I mistakenly wrote High Passage 2 in the OP when the Inkaalur actually appears in issue 5. At that point the magazine was published by FASA and edited by the Keiths.

So I guess the answer is "MAYBE?"

It's material that is not automatically canon, but that doesn't quite make it fanon, either.

I fully share your skepticism, hence the thread. Also why I'm curious if Clay Bush (1) actually published a version and (2) if so, revised the size.

The only way I see it qualifying as even a light battleship is if the Inkaalur was a TL 14/15 transitionary design, introduced toward the end of the Rim War, and facing mostly TL 13 second rates with some TL 12 third rates and the occassional TL 14 first rate. The Confederation Navy of the Rim War was largely a battlecruiser fleet per T20. So Inkaalurs weren't going up against anything like the Kokirraks: more likely 150kdt TL 13 Zeus-class battlecruisers.

Then again, maybe it was all brilliant marketing from the Inkaalur design firm.

"We spent 20 years developing this ship and NOW the Admiraltry is saying it hates the whole battlecruiser concept? Call in the creatives, get Daan Drapiir on the com -- we need to rebrand this entire proposal! Everything, starting with this holologo. What if we call this ship . . . a dreadnot? [sic]"

Wow, thanks for that!

I'm not fluent in MT statblocks -- does this look like something that could stand up against a 150dt, TL 13 battlecruiser?

With Agility 0 and very light armour (6) it is mostly a sitting duck. It can easily be destroyed by missiles or spinals.

It is rather cheap and has good screens, but I do not think that is enough to counterbalance the lack of defences.

It seems to have fuel for two J-3 with is an odd choice?
