Is there a "World Cup" tournament in Traveler?

The main problem is traveling matches. Every planet has a different gravity, and the home team would have a huge advantage in almost any sport.

or would there be a standard grav playing field for events? complete with official astroturf held in place with the amazing high-tech space velcro? :)

What scale do you mean by "World Cup"?
Subsector-wide, sector-wide, Domain-wide, Imperium-wide? Whatever one decides on is limited by distance and time. IIRC, it takes 2 years to travel from one end of the imperium to the other. I might be wrong there. But regardless, double it so half the time is travelling and the other doing live media for "the game".

Do they use a farm system like baseball? Do they do years prelims like the FIFA World Cup?

I wonder what a gymnasium/training/media ship is like? Luxury staterooms, best possible med-bay. How much tonnage might a standard football or soccer field take? Don't forget for height for goalposts maybe more for the kicker.

What about ringers? You know, like if THE SPORT was water polo, having that Dolphin enforcer or a Luriani? Or if it involved 3D environment, having that Suerrat?

An Ursa football team:xh::

"Bear down, REGINA BEARS, make every play clear the way to victory;
Bear down, REGINA BEARS, put up a fight with a might so fearlessly.
We'll never forget the way you thrilled the Domain with your T-formation.
Bear down, REGINA BEARS, and let them know why you're wearing the crown.
You're the pride and joy of DENEB, REGINA BEARS, bear down.":coffeegulp:

What about a yacht race?

the timeline has a Spinward Marches yacht race somewhere around 1105 I think. I used part of that as one of my games - they encountered one of the racers (and as I used the Mongoose rules, that was actually a connection with one of the players).

edit: when setting up games, if in the OTU, I dig through that very useful timeline to see if there any events that, if nothing else, may add some chrome and the living universe vibe to my all too rare Traveller gaming sessions

Racing yachts will be different from the standard yachts that are they playthings of nobles, though nobels might own those too, they will be crewed by professional racing crews, now some variables will have yo be added to make the races interesting. There are two kinds of races, those within system and interstellar starship races, Racing yachts will have maneuver-6 and the crews will overclock their drives to get maximum acceleration out of them.

they did have high G but it was a circuit around the entire Spinward Marches:

067-1103 First Spinward Point-to-Point Race begun on Trin (Spinward Marches 3235) requiring the collection of encrypted data chips from Glisten, Mora, Lunion, Rhylanor, Lanth, Regina and Frenzie. Behind the Claw,SJG, 1998, p. 07.

edit: and somewhere I have a a racing yacht detailed out...High G & high jump. definitely a plaything though

I think a trans world championship would be rather difficult to pull off.

Maybe as an exhibition, but there's enough variety of worlds (from gravity to air quality) that affect the athletes in permanent ways that are difficult to compensate for that I don't think a fair competition could be done.

I don't know but I would think that, say, a heavy weight fighter from a high G world could weigh the same as one from a standard G world, but still have a base muscular and skeletal advantage.

Maybe they would lack in speed, but who can say.

Of course, the Solomani version of Squamish is Moopsball
(link to HTML transcription of Moopsball rules on eblong.com, rules written by Gary Cohn, edited by Damon Knight, and originally published in Orbit 18.)

My gut instinct is that vuvuzelas were actually designed for moopsball.

OTOH, I'm not sure they're loud enough individually... maybe alpenhorns?

Knock knock.

Who's there?

Little old lady.

Little old lady who?
Spoiler:
Little old lady here to give you yodeling lessons. I see you've got an aptitude for it already!
