JG Referee Screen

I'm undertaking a casual project of making a corrected Ref Screen based on the Judges Guild item No. 75. Other than the weapon damages and some of the numbers which were corrected in the errata doc, are there any other things which should be amended to make it compatible with the 2nd Ed.? Any new data not on the original which would be useful on my homebrewed screen?

Mine's buried somewhere in a box. I thought it was a great device, especially how it combined the weapons and weapons vs armor tables into ONE set of tables! I thought it improved on some things; some of the damage numbers for the smaller handguns, for example. Can't remember exactly, but didn't it change the dice so you had a better average but the same max damage?

The only issue I had was that it was in four pieces, but a bit of Contact (sticky book covering plastic) changed that (and made it beer-proof)...

I had one back in the 1990s... I used it extensively, but I made corrections on it to bring everything to match the 1981+ LBBs (with precedence given to Book 4).

A few years ago I got a new set, but I haven't gone back and re-compared them to the books.

The JG screen is the only product from JG that I have used. Other than the mentioned weapon damages I never had any issues with it. However I actually preferred the weapon tables in Snapshot for day to day combat resolution - more detail.

But other than that the JG screen is very cheap and badly made in terms of practically using it as a referee screen - having to sellotape it together etc. I would hardly call it a referee screen, more like a few pieces of card that you can make into a screen. traveller has always suffered from quality of product compared to the likes of D&D.

Funnily enough though the Mongoose referee screen is their best product to date. The only thing missing from it is a summary of character skills from all the books which I added to it as an aide memoir. Still isnt as good as the 4th ed D&D screen though.

I've had one for years only just only lamented a few weeks back and then used invisible tape to make it into a screen! It's mintox!!! My only gripe is the colour that green is horrid!!!

Been marking up mine in preparation for a game this week (it's one I printed from PDF, no worries), and one thing I noticed is that the range band table is different from my LBB. (Close is listed as "same", short as "adjacent", medium as 2-5, long 6-9, and very long 10-14.) Is this from another book? (I only have 1-3 for combat stuff.)

The JG screen is based upon CT 1E 1st printing. Called Cryton, asked him to check.
That's on page 29.
Close same
Short adjacent band (5m)
Med 2-5 (50m)
long 6-9 (250m)
vlong 10-14 (500m)
Disengaged 15+

For those with 1E, 2E is (per p 32)
RANGE BANDS
Close, Short: 0
Medium: 1 to 2
Long: 3 to 10
Very Long: 11 to 20

Thanks. I keep forgetting there are those little differences between printings. (In the end, I don't suppose it matters which you use, as long as you're more or less consistent.)

My only complaint about the "screen" is that the tables are on both sides of the boards. I would have liked the tables on one side and even JG 'art work' on the other so as to have a true screen. :p

I used the screen in the past, and found it helpful, though I know that one way it was helpful was as a place to paperclip notes to. Some additional information that I typed up as an addition to the screen were the surprise DMs, and the Encounter Range table with the Terrain DMs. There were a couple others that I figured I'd rarely use, but I wanted to know where they were when needed.

By my addition of those tables you can tell that my games spent most of the time planetside. I guess your campaign will determine what tables you don't want to spend time flipping through books to consult in the heat of action.

That astrobrite green paper was shocking to the eyes.

Width of range bands is a pretty big one...

so is the weapon damages... 1e uses dice+adds, while 2e is always flat dice.

Which is why I extended mine with two extra bits of cardboard, and plastered Bill Keith's ship pics on the player's side to make it prettier... I actually liked the change to up the average damage of a body pistol (? it was something small), and LOVED the combined tables - so much easier.

I purchased the JG screen a couple of months ago, partly out of curiosity and partly out of my desire to collect all things CT.

I have the Mongoose screen which is luxurious by comparison and I have found it very useful, but for some reason I don't feel the need to use the JG screen. I can't put my finger on why, exactly, I prefer not to use it. It might be because of the awful "eye saver green" but I have found myself keeping things as simple as possible. For example I have The Traveller Book and Starter Traveller with the separate Charts & Tables booklet but while refereeing I love having just the 3 LBBs 1-3 in front of me. Unless I need to refer to an additional supplement I have all the information I need in those LBBs and at 48 pages per book I can find what I'm looking for more quickly than using the screen (as strange as that sounds).
My one and only use for the screen would be to use it as a shield for hiding my notes rather than as a quick reference guide.

My son suggested that I glue the JG screen to the inside of the Mongoose screen thereby giving the ref his tables and at the same time giving the players a fantastic panoramic view of the Type-S Scout cockpit.

I might very well do this but, as I said, all I need for reference are the LBBs.
