JTAS Contest # 23

PVernon

SOC-13
Knight
Here is contest #23s criteria and timings.
Come on over to JTAS this one looks interesting and different. Remember any Traveller design system can be used for these contests. I have seen all of the systems used at one time or another.

--------------------------------------------------

Design a "lower technology level" colony transport or support ship.
*********************************
That is the entire specifications,
**************************
Encouragement notes,
1. the Solmani/Vilani Interstellar wars was one of the periods with a
variety of colony activities but there have been a large number of
other periods with significant colonial activity. This is not
explicitly a Interstellar wars design contest but should be a good
opportunity to work up designs from that age even before there is a
set of rules expanding on the technology (limits) of the time.
Such time periods filled with conflict also suggest a variety of
designs in terms of armaments and auxillary craft from pacifists
attempting to maximize people and cargo to primarily military ships
ordered to support a "more baskets" effort.
2. "Lower technology level" is left fuzzy because of contrasting
definitions in the various versions. This does imply that higher
jump levels 4 and 5 are not available. Jump 3 Drive ships are in the
gray area for "lower technology.
3. Alien ships are welcome including contemporary with OTU Aslan who
continue to feed their "land hunger".
4. Arbitrarily, for this contest, Deep space jumps or Brown dwarfs or
deep space free planets are allowed. This is not to open discussion
about the merits of such events, simply mentioned so that some
designers, allocating fuel for multiple jumps can be a way to
overcome limitations of lower technology J drives.
5. Considering the latitude of the specifications, contestants
should hava a paragragh about sponsors, economics and target world(s)
Historically colonial ships have ranged from standard designs
converted for refugee cartage up to "Trillion Credit" scale planned
developments. Planetary and Megacorp activities including resource
exploitation colonies can also be considered as inspiration for
dedicated colonial ships and craft. Some government sponsered
colonization efforts almost certainly lasted several hundred years
and muliple generations of ship design.
6. Armaments, Craft and Maneuver G levels are up to designer choice.
Stealth, wilderness or cometary refueling and communications systems
also can be significant considerations for colonial efforts.
Reconfigurable, modular and disposable (one mission) ships might be
of interest.
7. As usual, adventure seeds, characters and specific ship stories
are welcome with entries.
Lets set the target for submissions to be in as Sunday April 4 with a
week for voting after that. Those dates are negotiable.

--------------------------------------------------

If the times are changed I will post an update.

Just over a week to go on the contest. And remember any Traveller design system is allowed. There are comonly 2 or 3 different systems represented in any given contest.

What format do the entries need to be in? Are webpages or PDF documents acceptable?

Thanks,
Flynn

Hi Flynn,

Entries are usually just text writeups submitted by e-mail to the previous winner though the good Baron Saarthuran von Gushiddan provided a spot for posting pics and deckplans and such during his hosting.

Submissions are then posted anonymously (usually) on the JTAS boards for ridicule... err feedback ;) and voting (also usually by e-mail and anonymously) with the winner announced on the boards.

Sorry to say (and sadly) but its a bit clubbish in that its kind of a JTAS subscriber only thing.

You could check out the Deckplan Contest site, though currently on hiatus due a RealLife(tm) crisis for the host. The current contest there (#4) has had the deadline extended to March 28 (or more) so you might still get in on that one. Its associated with the Yahoo Groups Deckplans pages, another great place and free to boot.

No worries, my friend,

I am a member of JTAS, and have yet to be blackballed, unlike my application to TAS. *sigh*

;)

Cool. I might consider doing something on this topic, then, if I've got time. Repeat, if I've got time. (Work's been quite hectic.)

More later,
Flynn

The entries are posted!
This time there are 5 entries and a bonus design by the contest moderator. As is fairly normal with these contests there were a few difforent design systems used. There are 3 GURPS designs, 1 FF&S2 design, 1 Book2 design, and the bonus design used HG2 with a few additions. But no T20 designs this time :(
Come on over to JTAS and look at the designs and vote for the best one.

Baron, I'm sure T20 will understand... take heart, my friend, for she is a forgiving mistress.

;)

Next time, we'll do what we can,
Flynn

Indeed Baron, your contributions on your site stand you in good light, worry not. Besides there always the next go

Hmm, should I take that to mean Sir Flynn that you too missed this round? I was of course trying to figure out the who's behind the what's but couldn't pick yours if its there
(not that I tried really hard ;) ).

Yes, Master Far-Trader,

Unfortunately work and other projects prevented me from achieving that goal. This next time, I shall do what I can to contribute, as T20 designs truely need a stronger representation. ;)

With regards,
Flynn

It would be good if the two active versions were equaly represented and each of the others had at least one entry. Yes that would be good! Then each of the contests would have ... lets see there are usualy 3 - 4 GURPS entries so that would make about 12 entries per contest. Yep that would be good.

That would be good, very good.

I tend to use T20 (as its current and compatible with HG/CT) or HG/CT, though MT and TNE wouldn't be out of the question. The only one I won't be doing (for lack of books) is GT but then there's no shortage of that on JTAS ;)

And don't sweat missing this go around Flynn, heck my own entry languished until the deadline loomed and I hacked a rather rushed version of my original grand ideas
(better a half-baked idea than none?)

Please note a problem has developed. See note below.

-----------------------------------------------
As of 18:30 Sunday, April 12 , Pacific US Time, we have a full
running tie.
If you have read the designs and have an opinion, please vote.
Operation plan, I will give it a couple more days, and beg for
voters,
if a clear winnner has not emerged by Wed. I will tie break.
Les

------------------------------------------------

This means that we need you to come and vote!!!

To all,
The voteing is done.
Stand by for contest 24. For a conversation on what that might be see the GURPs board at this site.
