Jump Engine Upgrade

For small, PC-scale ships (scout/free trader/etc...), does it ever make economic sense to upgrade jump engines?

Is that really something that is done? Or, if you want a higher jump, you get a ship designed with that engine.

That depends highly on the nature of hulls IYTU.

In a Book 2 universe, where hulls are divided into Engineering and Main Compartments, yes, it's sometimes worth doing.

In a Bk5 one, where most hulls are in fact bespoke, not so much.

T5 gives potential for doing so - you can get higher TL versions and free up a little space.

Situational? If you have a free trader it's probably easier to trade it in for a far trader, but if you have a custom-built expensive para-military ship it might make sense.

Trillion Credit Squadron has some rules for refitting ships. Jump drives are a major refit. Basically it costs 150% to install the new drive and it cannot be bigger than the original drive.
