[LF]Information on possible eco-systems under non-Earth conditions

I’m working on a custom setting that is inspired predominantly by 2300 and Dreampod 9 products. I have decided to coin the term “Hard Candy Sci-Fi” as a genre description. Mainly because I am going to play a bit with gravity and FTL etc.

I am trying to keep it moderately “hard” in terms of planetology. I’ve been able to rely on emails with my brother’s father-in-law, an astronomy professor, for help with many of those things. Although his explanations are often way over my head… I am not a scientist, astronomer or biologist.

But I also want some information (books, sites etc) for ideas on what xeno-biological/eco-systems are possible with differing atmospheres, pressures, gravity etc. As I said, it’s hard candy sci-fi, so I have lots of wiggle room. But I lack any background that would allow me to even have a notion of where to start with sketching them out.

Anyone know of any good old textbooks or web sites that could fill me in a little bit? I just need a starting point and can work off that.

The TV programme The Universe, one of the very best shows I've seen since Carl Sagan's Cosmos, has given me loads of ideas for my Traveller game. Very inspiring. :) Hulu make available some eps, IIRC.

Yep! This is on my Netflix as I came across it awhile back. There was another one that talked about three "pretend" planets that researchers decided to mock-up life and environment.

(Just need the wife to finish up her darn Downton Abbey frenzy... stupid queue.)
