I’m working on a custom setting that is inspired predominantly by 2300 and Dreampod 9 products. I have decided to coin the term “Hard Candy Sci-Fi” as a genre description. Mainly because I am going to play a bit with gravity and FTL etc.
I am trying to keep it moderately “hard” in terms of planetology. I’ve been able to rely on emails with my brother’s father-in-law, an astronomy professor, for help with many of those things. Although his explanations are often way over my head… I am not a scientist, astronomer or biologist.
But I also want some information (books, sites etc) for ideas on what xeno-biological/eco-systems are possible with differing atmospheres, pressures, gravity etc. As I said, it’s hard candy sci-fi, so I have lots of wiggle room. But I lack any background that would allow me to even have a notion of where to start with sketching them out.
Anyone know of any good old textbooks or web sites that could fill me in a little bit? I just need a starting point and can work off that.
