Long time lurker saying hi

Just thought I'd say hello after lurking here forever... :)

I'm in the middle of an enjoyable Star Wars Saga game. After this campaign runs its course I've got this urge to do a Firefly/Serenity game. We played using the MWP Serenity RPG which worked ok, but my group seems to like d20-ish games. As GM I seem to be ok with most d20 games (except, oddly, for D&D, where the prep time drives me somewhat insane). I've been going through the T20 rules lately with an eye towards figuring out how to adapt them for the 'Verse.

Greetings! Glad you decided to delurk ;)

One of my pet peeves still with T20 is prep time. Characters and stat blocks take much more time than I prefer. That's a legacy from the d20 System. It's one of the main reasons for my work on SciFi20 right now!

Welcome aboard to the board.

When i started my T20 game I had a night just devoted to Chargen. It actually worked out rather well.

As for prep time for NPC's and such I usually don't bother with the chargen process. I just mock things up using a kind of short hand. I use just the bonuses and only list key stats, feats and skills. My Philosophy is that formal Chargen is just for PC's, NPC's can be approximated. I stick to published vehicals and ships for the most part. it really cuts down on the prep.

Like you said, long prep time is a legacy of d20 in general, though D&D in my experience is a little bit trickier due to the fact that you need to expect the characters to kill the opposition and "take their stuff" - and magic items need to be carefully thought out.

I've found that as GM I can whip out some pretty heavy-duty opposition in my Star Wars Saga game really quickly, with no character generation software. Ditto with True20, so there are certainly tweaks to the system that can be done to streamline it. I've noticed that my players really enjoy playing d20-based games so I try to stay in that direction. For some reason buckets of dice or multiple dice type systems (i.e. Storyteller, Serenity, Savage Worlds) don't seem to "work" as well in our group.

I've heard murmurs of SciFi20, is there any posting or announcement which consolidates the plans/mission statement for it?

When I started with T20, the hardest part was waiting for Hunter to post the chapters I needed.... :P

Seriously, the prep time isn't any worse than other D20 games I've run. Those being D&D 3.0, D&D 3.5, T20, and one session each of Judge Dredd, Fading Suns D20, and one other one.

I'm posting drafts in the Moot (paid area of the website), but I haven't posted a new draft in a bit. Working on the rules and a house setting constantly and hope to have a new rules draft (3rd) up this weekend and maybe a (very) rough draft on the setting next week.

EDIT: Looks like you have access to the Moot. You should be able to go to the SciFi20 forum there and download the most recent files.

ROFL! That's why I'm trying to do it in bigger chunks with SciFi20. Of course that means it takes longer, and my time these days is more divided than before T20 was actually released ;)
