Looking for CT+

I hear from time to time about two previous attempts at ressurecting CT better than the original. One is ACT (Advanced Classic Traveller?) which I understand was written by Avenger. The other is CT+. Does anyone know:

Who created CT+?

Is a PDF available online?

I'd like to see it for myself. Thanks.

CT+ was hunter's project to create a CT version with the T20 expansions built in. It was in late development or early playtest when MWM nixed it, IIRC.

Hunter's not permitted to release it...

Is it too late to get in on the playtest?

Just kidding. :)
Thanks for the information.

Why was it nixed?

My guess. Even back then Mongoose probably had made overtures to Marc who decided to nix CT+ and ACT to see how high Mongoose would go to get the exclusive license. Once they got to the right price the deal was struck and we now know the results.

Nah this was a good bit before that. It was nixed as to not compete with T5...

What can ya do?

Wish I could. I thought it was pretty good. It ran a 2d6 system, but with tasks handled similarly to T20. Combat also was more along the lines of T20 rather than CT.

One of the reasons that I was interested in seeing what had already been done, is that I have resolved to make sure that Traveller retains a D6 rules set for people like me who enjoy Classic Traveller’s simpler game mechanics. If RTT follows the 2d6 path to a CT-like system, then I need do nothing but check it out. On the other hand, if RTT follows the D20 mechanics (like their other games) or the T4 roll many dice mechanic (like T5 is reported to be) then there is still a need for a unified, simplified, updated 2D6 game mechanic. Marc has chosen not to allow either CT+ or ACT (both 2D6 systems, I believe) to move forward – and that is his right. However, he cannot prevent the creation of an open source D6 based system compatible with a certain out-of-print RPG in the far future.

Marc has every right to make T5 however he wants it. Mongoose has every right to make RTT however they need to so that it will attract new players. And old timers have the right to substitute a compatible set of D6 rules for either of those versions. CT needs a facelift and I believe that the rules need a lite (CT-LBB 1-3 like) version and a Striker/FF&S like version that create fully compatible characters, vehicles and equipment. I would very much like to see simple/complex rules modules that are compatible and interchangeable. I would like to see the stats and equipment compatible with both CT and RTT (and T20 for that matter).

For the time being, I will just wait and see if it is still needed. I have no desire to step on the toes of anyone trying to earn a living, so I’ll give Marc and Mongoose a chance to do it their way before I throw a potentially unnecessary hat in the ring. I would prefer to let someone else do it.

Thanks for the soapbox and a chance to vent. I’m feeling MUCH better now. :)

Better still, once we see the SRD for MoTrav/RTT, we can use the same text for large chunks. How large is yet to be seen, but it's quite likely to be 70%+ of the rules materials.

I agree and I hold out a great deal of hope that RTT will be sufficiently compatable with CT to provide all I could want or need.

The above plan is just a backup in case RTT/T5 share nothing in common with CT/MT except the word "Imperium" in some of the world books.

When Mongoose releases the SRD, if you take it and make your version I'd love to look at it.

I agree that it's best to wait and see for sure which type of system RTT most closly models, and I'm hopig that since it's going to be based on CT it will have a d6-style mechanic. That's the "old school Traveller" feel, in my book!

Release as freeware!

Please?

Umm there is still a little matter of trademarks...

Yes I could strip out the Traveller trademarks and the rules themselves would likely pass under copyright law, but I don't feel like pissing Marc off in the process.

Sorry :(

Might be a conflict of interest (T20), but...

Perhaps let MG know you have some mechanical ideas regarding Traveller that they may be interested in having a look at... ;)
