Anyone wanna set up a betting pool where parts surviving re-entry will land after it fails?
This is an interesting little point about orbital traffic control.

I would imagine that some worlds, notably more densely populated ones, would have rather strict orbit entry, selection, and maintenance rules simply to account for the potential problem of malfunctioning starships falling out of sky in flaming wreckage and raining down on an elementary school at recess, or some other horror.

I know, for example, that down in San Diego there's a very nice, scenic mesa, barren of housing. You'd think by now it would be filled with luxury homes. But the reason its clear is because its in line with the end of the Miramar Marine Air Station. When the jets take off, that's where they fly over, and it's empty Just In Case.

I don't know how you would manage it (it's an orbit), but I can see it having to be taken into consideration with the traffic volume some of these large worlds could have.

That’s why I think many downports would be coastal, so you have an ocean to crash into.

There's an abandoned and fenced-off street grid that used to be a tract of houses between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and the shore at Dockweiler Beach, too. Some homes' foundations are still there.
