Well, I'm glad it isn't just me this time. The TML has been silent since Friday, and the lists link at the top of the CotI page is timing out.
Loren just posted over on the GT forums that the TravellerCentral server was hit by a cracker and everything on the server deleted. They are working to see what they can recover and get things running again.
As Loren put it... *sigh*
Hello,
Yes, the TML and all of TravellerCentral.com are down. I'm using an
old subscriber list to notify everyone, so if you've unsubscribed in
the last several months, I apologize for sending this to you. And if
I've missed anyone that you know of, please let them know the status.
A couple days ago, a cracker penetrated the TravellerCentral.com
server and deleted all files, possibly in retaliation for Tod stopping
an attack a month ago where someone tried to usurp the server and set
up their own rogue mail server. The recent backups are lost (and Tod
had been within a week of putting a new backup system online too).
He's going to go back to an older backup and rebuild the system (with
tightened security measures).
Since he doesn't believe the attacker overwrote files but just mucked
up the inodes, he's hopeful that much of the user data can be
recovered - it will just take a good deal of time.
The plan is to get the server and basic services (mail server) back up
as soon as practical, I think maybe within a few days, then get user's
data back if possible, which may take a few weeks.
I'll send more details as they become available, or if you have
questions, let me know. With luck you won't hear from me, but from the
list when it's up again.
And as for that cracker miscreant, I just hope they get within range
of my FGMP...

I should hope so.Well, ain't that sweet. I especially like the, "retaliation," bit. Hopefully the cracker's death will be painful, embarassing and soon.
The TML's not quite back yet, but it's getting close.
The machine and OS and most services are back, bare bones. However,
the latest backups were on mounted disks during the attack and were
lost.
Tod's trying to restore some things from an old CD backup but he's not
too hopeful that will work. So it's probably start from scratch.
But he says he can have the TML list recreated in the mailing list
software within the next few days. When it's up, I'll mass-subscribe everyone from the list I had from last year's recreation of the list (and deal with all the corrections).
Tod's ordered a duplicate server that will be there (Montana) soon and
then he'll set up off-site synchronization so this shouldn't happen again.
Once he gets that stuff settled, we'll look into getting the archives
restored as much as possible.
And thanks to all for their offers of support - and help in meting out
justice to the rat who did this (especially the offer of ortillery support from
three naval cruisers in orbit - if we get targeting info, you may hear some loud noises somewhere on Earth...).

Not to annoy the girl but there'd be a lot less collateral damage with the ortillery of three naval cruisers :smirk:
