For one thing he would have much greater support and Margaret much less, since he wouldn't be tainted by the rumors of fracticide. For that reason he would also have no reason to fear Strephon's return as he would have done nothing wrong (Whether he would've wanted to give up the reins of power again is another matter and ultimately depends on his personality and we have no clue whatsoever to what kind of person he was).

He should have picked up more support than Lucan did and with the support of the Moot he could probably have stopped so many other factions rebelling.

Your right thou' there isn't much written about Varian. I always had the impression that he was Lucan's sensible, boring, older brother. But he may only come accross as boring because there isn't anything written about him.

IIRC, they're twins. Varian being only minutes older. But, many identical-twin-pairs are mirror image behaviourally &/or apitudinally. Many aren't. Were they identical or fraternal? I wonder...
