Merchant Prince Chargen Question

Marchand

SOC-12
I've been on a Classic Traveller kick recently, exploring advance chargen from Books 4-7, not having bothered with it much previously (I was more a Bks 1-3+Supp 4 type of person).

Rolling up a Free Trader under Book 7 rules, I see that to sit the examination for O4 requires the character to have Pilot-1.

However as far as I can tell, the only way to get Pilot skill is under Deck or Master Departments - neither of which is open to Free Traders.

Conceivably a Free Trader could get a transfer up to a fledgling line, get assigned to Deck dept, roll Pilot skill, then get bumped back down to Free Trader, but it seems like a roundabout way for Free Traders to recruit their first officers+.

Or am I missing something..? Thanks!

Strictly from memory,
the whole promotion/test/skill thing doesn't apply to the fast and loose Free Trader career path ... it was just for the nose-to-the-grindstone corporation crowd.

I'll double check that when I get a chance ... my memory ain't what it once was.

From CT oficial errata (you'll find the link in DonM signature), page 20 (errata in Merchant Prince):

Page 26, Service Skills, Free Trader Business (correction): Change the die roll 5 entry from Steward to Pilot. With this change, a Free Trader can now acquire Pilot skill.

Of course, the rest of errata can also be interesting reading...

I'm afraid your memory betrayed you here, as the system is the same tan for larger lines, just the tables and requisites are different.

I looked it up and you are correct, I was mistaken.
It has been too long since I played Classic Traveller.
