Meson beam maximum range

Classic Traveller thread, not Mongoose Traveller thread.

So the closest you can come is to say long range in High Guard.

This can be converted to Mayday range, but the numbers have always worried me a bit.

In FF&S, meson range is based on effective tunnel length, where 1m of tunnel equals 1000km of range. So, a 3m tube has a 3000km range. TL has adjustments to effective length, with higher TL being more efficient, and lower TL be less efficient.

I don't think the Striker guns have "range" because at the level of play for Striker, "everything" is in range, so they don't need to specify.

This is a classic Traveller thread.

Board rules mean it is an infraction to bring up other editions, which is why I have refrained from doing so.

There is the range listed in LBB:4 for battlefield meson guns, 50km maximum.

That's kinda what I thought. Couldn't recall anything in CT or MT. Only thing I could think of was, because the thing has to hit (mostly) inside the target and that was going to get harder with distance due to the time lag, to come up with some IMTU solution involving increasing the impact of agility. I'm willing to throw it open; not sure if I should request the thread be moved or not for that.

And, yeah, the Mayday ranges were predicated on the trope sci fi lasers so they are a bit weird. Since we're forced to do trope sci fi or add some sort of magical device that has absolutely no impact on other tech to make the existing lasers work, I figure I can live with that. Or discard it and use it only for particle beams, which is kinda cool because it gives particle beams an extreme range. Nice reason to take a couple of particle beam spinals along.

Technically as I understand it the meson gun is an advanced form of particle weapon. At least not counting the George Meson version.

It makes sense that Agility would matter more vs meson guns than other weapons. A meson gun shot has to not only intersect the target, but has to be correctly timed so that it decays at exactly the time it does so. That makes evasions in three dimensions useful whereas against other beam weapons evasions are only useful in two.

Who is George Meson?

Since it's projecting a particle that decays, and increasing the half life by accelerating it, the maximum range would be based on the maximum velocity it can achieve, no?

Who is George Meson?

He was a Terran Confederation particle physicist. He was considered a middle-weight in the field . . . ;)

He was the first physicist to successfully trap them for long duration in a set-up now known as a Meson-Jar.

Briefly involved in interstellar politics in his youth before committing himself to his scientific career, he was one of the few opponents to oppose the conversion of the United Worlds into the Terran Confederation, refusing to sign on to the Articles of Confederation as the Constitutional framework of the new Interstellar Government. He is still remembered by the Terran University that bears his name.
