Mgt = T4?

IT'S OUT!

Awww, no. Not till November :(

Oh well, to preorder or not to preorder, that is the question. Or more precisely how long before I take the plunge and preorder the pocket edition :)

I wasn't sure about buying into Mongoose Traveller, until I'd heard a while back about the pocket edition. That tipped the scales because of the form factor and I knew I'd have a less easy chance of saying no to it.

You'd imagine. The way I look at it is this, it's an ideal format for the game for me personally, but it also gives Mongoose an opprtunity to fix some of the issues that were highlighted after the release of the original book (cost, art and layout, errata).

A bit sneaky perhaps, but at £10 a pop, probably worth it I think most fans will agree. In a way, it's a bit like the RQ Deluxe book that they brought out as a response to criticism (albeit different criticism, as the fans wanted a bigger book, not smaller!).

Is the main reason that Mercenary isn't receiving any love basically that you all expected it to have an SMG in it?

:D

I'm more curious with this rush to get so much out so quickly what they see as sustaining them through 10 years of Traveller publishing?

I think it's the cause of most of the problems. If they'd spent a little more time on the layout, art, proofreading etc they could've avoided all this grief.

Incidently, what is wrong with the Light Machine Gun stats, included in the Mercenary book? What's the difference between a LMG and a SMG?

Hopefully the pocket edition has no interior art. In this day of great internet art, I don't much care for the cheaper stuff in my rulebooks. It just adds to the page count. Also, nobody ever complains about no art, but at least half the people always complain about some art, as my mate (Alvin) Nixon used to say. :p

A LMG is somewhat bigger than an assault rifle, is normally fired from a
fixed position, and often uses belted ammunition - it is the little brother
of the heavy machine gun, or the big brother of the assault rifle.

A SMG is somewhat smaller (especially shorter) than an assault rifle, is
normally fired while carried, and it almost always uses magazines - it is
the little brother of the assault rifle, or the big brother of the automatic
pistol.

The original lbbs got by without any artwork, and still looked really stylish in my view. I hope the new lbb will follow the trend.

In general, a LMG fires rifle bullets and a SMG fires pistol bullets.
(Rust's comparisons seem accurate.)

The autocarbine fills the SMG's role. It seems more like a P90 than an MP-40, and in a sci-fi game, that's all good.

The phrase SMG is somewhat losing purchase in the 21c, whereas auto-carbine is a very good description of an SMG anyway.

50% of TMB artwork is reasonable to excellent,
only about 30% in 760, but more like 95% in Mercenary, so perhaps Mongoose have listened and heard.

:D

At first read, I did miss my old reliable SMG, but then I realized they're using "Carbine" for SMG analogues. That works fine for me.

There is a segment of the Traveller fanbase that is interested in and very knowledgeable about military gaming. For instance, I know there are a lot of veterans on CotI. I also think this group includes a lot of gearheads and gun nuts.

I had hoped that Mercenary would cater to these segments of the fanbase, but it just feels off target to me. It's hard for me to nail down the exact problem, but it lacks the hard edge that the original CT Mercenary had.

Every time I look at this book, I find another nit to pick. I don't think there are major flaws here... but the minor ones are starting to pile up.
