MgT2300 or Classic 2300AD

Hey guys, help a brother out. Im completely undecided on which system to use for my upcoming campaign.

I started with classic, then switched due to the dated and clunky feel of some of the systems, but now with all the MgT translation screwups Im thinking of going back.

Sell me one way or the other.... help!

I'll be watching this, to see what comes up-- I've seen your posts here and on Mongoose forum, too.

I'm afraid I can't help, as I've only bought & read MG2300, and haven't played 2300AD in a looong time.I was originally hooked by the Lone Wolf/Three Blind Mice campaign articles, but could never get things to completely work in my head. Never did get to play them, either.

You've already sold yourself; you want us to validate your choice.

You wisely chose classic 2300. Congratulations :)

Its sounds like MgT2300 will make a good sourcebook and gap-filler, at least until a revised edition comes out.

Yes, its a shame really, the Traveller system is so proven and familiar... but dang the mechanical aspects of tugging it into the 2300 universe are just a big pain in the ....

MgT is a solid core, but the supplements are of fair to excruciatingly bad quality. Making the switch to an older edition, however, especially t2300 or 2300ad, is little better.

It boils down to "Pick your Problem Set."

Oh, and it doesn't help that MgT2300 was a hasty conversion of 2320.

Yes, and Ill be honest and admit that the fact that most of those commenting on my threads have expressed impressive knowledge of classic 2300AD and very little to no knowledge of MgT is a deciding factor.

Im in a bit of gaming desert in my location. I game a great deal on my own (yes, even RPGs... using the Mythic system - which I highly recommend - to help randomize events and make solo play entertaining) and have absolutely nobody local to discuss such things with.

Ive stumbled on a single interested player who is excited to play but sadly they have no background in sci-fi gaming at all. (Strictly a D&Der from way back)

You guys are my support group, my think tank, my buddies and my critics all in one!

I saw and responded to your post over at the Mongoose site, but didn't feel comfortable noting this there, but you might want to give GURPS Traveller a glance. Their starship build process is one of the best, lots of systems can clip into it and GURPS can clip into them, and you can play Rules Lite to keep the options from getting away from you.

Someone even did a port of the 2300U to GURPS, out there on the Internets someplace.

Might be the best of both worlds for you; fill in some gaps where GDW leaves you scratching your head.

As a long time fine of 2300AD I can tell you that I never used the old original rules set except for space craft and vehicle combat. Even then I tweaked a bit. For characters the MgT rules are pretty good and the growing variety of supplements can really add to one's 2300AD game. Since its the only "active" version out there I suggest getting used to it. While its not to hard to get all of the old stuff on PDF and even hard copy, there will never be anything new in those rules.

Regarding background and quality...well Mongoose has not impressed me. Given what is possible by small press RPG companies (see Eclipse Phase for instance) the low production values are saddening. I would LOVE to see a full color glossy 2300AD book with great art and an attractive layout.

Well despite the issues Im still encountering with the Traveller conversion, Ive decided to at least give MgT2300 a try. Its obviously the more playable system (roleplaying wise) and the various glitches with sensors converting over and what not should be easy to fix with a few house rules. (or at least Im hoping so)
