Missing something in CharGen

I'm a little confused by careers. If a character rolls a Mishap, they cannot return to the career, and lose the benefit for that term. I got that, but do they still roll a Skill or Event?

Second, do they have to roll Qualification for each term?

Page 5 gives, in outline form, a flowchart process.

MGT CRB p5 said:
6. a. Choose one of the Skills and Training tables for this
career and roll on it.
__ b. Roll for survival on this career.
__ c. If you succeed, go to Step 7.
__ d. If you did not succeed, then events have forced you
from this career. Roll on the Mishap table, then go to Step 9.
7. a. Roll for Events.

Roll for a skill for the term FIRST. (step 6a)
then roll for survival (step 6b) - failure forces you out, and you THEN roll a mishap; but, since you skip to step 9, you lose the event and advancement roll opportunities.

And no, you don't roll qualification each term. The advancement roll has four possible outcomes (only 3 per roll, however):
Roll > Terms && Roll > Advancement: Promoted (with possible skill as a result) and continued qualification
Roll > Terms && Roll < Advancement: Not Promoted, but continued qualification
Roll < Terms && Roll > Advancement: Promoted, but no longer qualified. (Usually forced retirement)
Roll < Terms && Roll < Advancement: Not promoted, qualification cancelled.

The only time you roll for qualification again is changing which career or sub-career you are in.

Not "rolling under advancement" but "an advancement roll which is less than terms". One roll, compared to two different numbers.

Arise, thread!

Just to come back to this: Is their a voluntary option to stop rolling for more terms? Can a player just say, "That's enough, I'm ready."?

I tried walking my wife through a character, and she kept wanting to stop after 4 or 5 terms. The dice didn't agree, and she ended up with three careers across 7 terms. (*I* thought it was a cool character, after all was said & done, but I dunno if she'll play it.)

Sure, you don't have to continue after a term.

There's always an option!

Ask yourself this -
Do you want to ignore the dice and play Traveller with your wife, or would you prefer to insist on playing by the book and have your wife go do something else...?
