modular stateroom

Trouble is, the Advanced Base doesn't include acceleration couches (IMTU stateroom beds are designed to absorb acceleration stresses, but they cost more - part of the cabin cost) and doesn't have built-in zero-G handles, etc. The self-contained fuel tanks aren't ZG rated either - nor the freshers... IMTU a whole host of H&S factors prevent PCs from abusing these things. By the time you've upgraded everything, you've created a normal stateroom.

I pretty much agree, with the caveat that, for the most part, gravity will be present in cargo bays, so the gravity for the fuel tanks is a non-issue as is the lack of Z-G handholds; the PP isn't going to be in use, so venting it's not an issue, and as long as you're in the canon setting, or an ATU with the same tech standards, Inertial Compensation usually includes the cargo decks, so again, not an issue. The freshers and any venting they might do could be an issue.

You would need to provide some extra access space...

you'll note that my portable SR design could easily have one endcap piece with a manual hatch in it, opening inward.

Well, you can fly Southwest Airlines into El Paso, but if you're wanting to fly into Clovis, NM, you'll have to settle for some smaller outfit. And then there's always the, "All the others are booked up and I have to leave TODAY," passenger - and we need not explore too deeply the reasons why they didn't have time to book a reservation in advance on a nicer ship. I've always thought the anti-hijack program and a well-armed crew were absolute necessities for Far Trader captains.

Absolutely, Carlobrand. ;) The more "questions asked" the fewer ... "precautions" that are necessary. Which is why any independent is going to have lots and lots of "precautions".

Military has used modular systems for years in cargo spaces. For cargo planes we had self contained comfort pallets with bathrooms/fridges/ovens/coffee makers. Recliner seats were mounted on pallets to so you could set up however many passengers you wanted. It's not a stretch to see sleeping arrangments using the litters with a seating area, comfort pallet, entertainment system for cheap travel. We're not talking glamorous here although you could use standard shipping containers and doll them up however you like. They would actually take up less weight as most of it would be empty space rather than packed with cargo. I have ship designs, unapproved secret squirrel stuff, that would use shipping containers to hide additional energy generators and weapons so it could function as a Q ship.
