Alien Module 3: Darrians
travdarrians.jpg

This Alien Module explores the mysterious and enigmatic Darrians and their domain within the Spinward Marches. With access to incredible technologies, including the apocalyptic and legendary Star Trigger, the Darrians have nonetheless only a relatively small empire, far from the Third Imperium.

Alien Module 3 covers shows you how to create Darrian characters, and explores their psychology, culture, society and technology. New Darrian ships are featured, and every world within their domain is fully detailed, allowing your characters to walk on their surfaces and visit their peoples.

Stay tuned for details of our Corporation Open Day on October 23rd!

Got mine Sunday at my FLGS here in Delaware, so it is out on this side of the pond.

I've given it a cursury read and while I'm not feeling any buyers remorse, there are some things in it that don't jibe right for me. When I get a chance to read it at one sitting not snatched moments over 2 days I'll post again.

I like the cover art, and have ever since I first saw it (in RQII... bah, with no title), but the more I've learned about Darrians as a race the less appealing the book is in general.

Though apparently there is a discussion of torpedo boat doctrine therein, which is a plus for me.

So ... has Mongoose resolved the question of whether the Darrians are "Elves in Space" or just a watered-down translation of Gene Roddenberry's Vulcans?

Gee Keklas write political polls much?

The answer is neither. Do they value knowledge and education? Yes. Are they unemotional, no not in the least. Are they different than any other human culture, yes. Do they enjoy a well designed, built to last comfortable to use technology, yes. Do they live in trees, no. Are they the grand result of an experiment set up and left to run by an Ancient, yes.

Wanna know more? Buy a copy or find someone who has one. I know your position on Darrians already, no point in saying more.

Ok where did the Nobles go? Darrians have Nobility, Sure it's not a Hereditary Aristocracy, but it's still a Noble Class that's at the top of the Feudal Technocracy that is the Confederation.

You make it in buy being honoured for Excellence in your Profession or Field of Study, or by studying Government.

or has this piece of Darrian Culture bean edited out to placate the sensibilities of members of the Readership?

Just want to add enjoyed most of the rest of the book and will work bits in to my CT/MT campaigns.

as to GT Humanity, well in my city no shop has stocked all but the Core GURPS products since Y2K and they haven't reordered even 4e basic once they run them out.

And in any case, it is, sadly, superceded by the new sourcebook. But for what it's worth:

The government of Darrian is a council with 100 members. The Council appoints a given fraction of the population (1 in 20,000) to the noble rank of Bodek (usually translated knight). When a member of the Council dies or retires, it selects one of the knights to replace him. The new member becomes a Monigh (baron). Being selected to serve as a minister leads to being made Lezom (marquis), Mehdar (count) and Yisar (duke).

All of this is political, not academic. But impressive academic achievements is probably a good way to be made a knight.

PS. GT:Humaniti is available from SJG for $10.

That's nice to know, thanks! :)

I specifically left out the political structure of the world Darrian for several reasons. Firstly since I had 20+ other worlds to cover, I would have felt obligated to include an equally in-depth description of the government on each one. As (prior to editing) I was already nearing my page limit, it didn't seem like a good idea.

Secondly I found it difficult to rationalise the inclusion of a noble hierarchy with Imperial titles, as I wanted the Darrians to be their own unique race and not be mistakenly viewed as being a puppet satellite state of the 3rd Imperium. Of course I didn't want to directly contradict what was in AM8, so I included a more generic, academic related SOC table at the start of Char Gen instead, to cover the majority of the other Confederation worlds which are not Feudal technocracies.

If you want to use Hans' alternate title names then go for it! There will be little conflict with the rest of the book since the specifics of all of the world governments have been left open to GM tinkering. ;)

I am so getting this in a few weeks.

I liked it very much.

It gave the Darrians a hidden, brutal history that they are ashamed of (those that know what REALLY happened) and gave several possibilities for how the Star Trigger was supposed to work, without telling you how it worked.

Yes, the Star Trigger of 1105 is still a bluff, like in AM8.

Only in the artwork do the Darrians come across as space elves; mostly because of the pointy ears I guess.

As a matter of fact, no.

Thanks for the lesson.

Are you telling me to no longer post in this thread or on this topic?

For the record, the Darrians are so well-detailed that they are no longer interesting. There is no mystery to their existence, and they have evolved into a mere plot device for advancing an adventure. Even painting them blue does not change their essential function as a humanoid race of esthetics and scientists providing patronage and motivation to adventuring parties.

As I noted, you have little or no use for them, and see no need to expand on a booring subject. This not an attack on you, feel free to contribute what you may.

I personally had no love for the whole Blue Darrians riff, and quit posting on it because I had nothing constructive to contribute.

I imagine that there are tropes or versions of Traveller that get under all of our skins, each different from the others.

There is no nobility in the Confederation! The Confederation is not a Feudal Technocracy. The Confederation is an Impersonal Bureaucracy.

The world government of Daryen is a Feudal Technocracy. The world government of Daryen has nobles and a nobility.

But the Darrian Confederation does not have nobles and is not a Feudal Technocracy. To think otherwise is to, quite frankly, not have actually read what has been written before.

Quite right. And what I wrote above concerned Darrian, not the Darrian Confederation. However, the elite of Darrian is likely to be well represented in the Confederation government (though not as well as that of Mire).
