Movies to watch before Traveller session

That's an interesting choice Blue Ghost. For me personally, it reminds me more of D&D basic as that's what we were playing around the time we saw that movie.
It one for the list though.

My basic template for writing adventures is Raiders or some Japanese anime. If you project Raiders 1000 years in the future, and replace trucks, motocycles and WW2 era weapons with LASERs, you got yourself one rocking adventure.

In fact I used to play Raiders for my first two gaming groups when we did Traveller. It got to the point where I didn't think about Lucas and Spielberg's film franchise anymore, but all the times my guys went rescuing hostages or exploring some dangerous Ancient site.

Cool stuff.

That's a really clever approach. I never thought of using such a film as Raiders for a template for a sci fi game. That's actually inspired me. Thanks :)

... An interesting link up about Red Dwarf is that my dad, during the late '70s and early '80s was a freelance comedy writer for the BBC (TV and Radio). The batch of writers in the circle he was associated with included Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, who went full time and started writing for the TV show 'Spitting Image' before going on to write Red Dwarf (under the joint name of Grant Naylor).
...

I loved the 'Spitting Image' TV show. My roommate and I practically rolled on the floor often watching that. There's only two shows that had me in stitches more often: Red Dwarf, and Doctor Doctor.

"Yum".

Just because I feel that these shows have "the referee's" point of view of the players & the Characters: :p

Space Balls
Blazing Saddles

PS: I like Mel Brooks movies

I love Mel Brooks movies too. High Anxiety is my favourite.

A couple of years ago we played a couple of games of Kenzer & Co's Aces & Eights. That 400 page core book is a beauty and the level of detail available to the GM is incredible (not as detailed as T5, might I add). Anyway, for such a realistic game, we ended up playing in the style of Blazing Saddles.

One day we will return to A&8s but I think that game will always remind me of Blazing Saddles

If you like to play near future, hard science Traveller, definitely catch the new film Europa Report. It's available in the US on on-demand and many online services (Amazon, iTunes, Vudu), and opens in theaters on August 1. It's a small, inexpensive film but it really makes an effort to keep the "science" in science fiction. Best of its kind since Moon. Makes me want to pull out Mongoose Traveller and the brilliant Zozer Games release, Orbital, right now.

Thanks mechascorpio, this looks good.
Just did a search and here is the website for it:
http://www.magnetreleasing.com/europareport/

Yes, keep an eye on the site, because that's where news about the international dates will probably show up first. I'm frustrated talking about something like this when friends in Europe, Asia and even Canada can't see it. Things aren't as bad as they used to be in this respect, but it boggles me that in this day and age (heck, I was watching it through the internet!) it's a problem at all.

Still waiting for this on Netflix.

You list is missing the obvious three: Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi. Not so much the prequels. The animated series Star Wars: Clone Wars is good, as is the animated Starship Troopers series.

After Earth (2013)

Watched this one last night. Survival on an hostile planet and single alien one on one combat. Different, but interesting.
