Nifty TL16 gadget wanted

From CSC Tech Level 16 description:

"The main new technology at TL 16 is the tractor, a reverse repulsor.
Tractors are somewhat unreliable but the technology has some
uses where fine control is not vital.

Primitive neural weapons are
available for use in personal combat."

- So, one of those?

I like the inclusion of tractor beams, though I would suggest that the TL 16 version be personal sized - with a vehicle-mounted one being TL 13-14 and a starship mounted one being TL 11-12.

Tri-Corder Now if you like, I've been meaning to work up some small but useful pieces of equipment, and a TL16 tri-corder would be a good exercise.

What does a tri-corder record? We can easily have a Biosniffer, EM Field Sensor, and Motion Sensor.

R2 Multisensor-12
TL C, 1 kg, Cr 2400.

About the size of a pack or cards, the multisensor is a combination Biosniffer, EM Field Sensor, and a Motion Sensor, wrapped up into one device. Its sensors have a range of 50 meters.

The R3 Multisensor-16, a TL16 artifact, has the same form factor of the TL12 version, but has an increased range of 150m. Of course, its value is much higher.

I don't know if you saw the MgT equipment list I did a while back, but you can lift from there. (Let me see if I can find it myself.)

But thanks for this - Traveller should have such things at such TLs for those of us who would like to rework the TL scale a bit.

Integral Laser Pistol is canonically TL 15.

Chameleon uniform is TL 15 as well; TL13 for hard suits.

I think that's for IR invisibility; chill cans, and so on. Or maybe the one where the surface of the suit can be changed in colour (jungle pattern, snow pattern, Imperial Marine maroon, etc).

I once gave a PC a Predator-like chameleon suit (real-time transparency) - but I pegged it at TL 17. ;)

No. Chameleon option for battledress is full color, according to Traveller's Digest - Parade mode is vibrant Maroon, deployment is an appropriate camouflage.

JTAS 23 makes it available for even soft suits at TL14. (Ship's Locker, p46.)

That the chameleon options for ships are color changing hulls is in SSOM and in MTJ (don't recall which issue, tho').

I calculated the stats using GunMaker plus a mapping to Mongoose Traveller damage ratings. The weapon should conform well enough with most Traveller rules.

The ergonomic design means that, when carried, it adds *nothing* to encumbrance. Of course when carried in pallet containers the usual rules about mass and volume apply. If you wanted to, it could carry a (small) to-hit bonus, but I wasn't looking for that in particular -- in fact it may be more important to boost the overall quality of the artifact so that it will still work after all these years.

I don't know the number of shots; I would say it's 5% to 6% better than the TL15 versions -- when you use the TL16 battery. A TL15 battery can be made to fit the form factor, but you're back to TL15 battery life in that case.
IIRC I gave an Old Darrian laser pistol 15 shots in that adventure I wrote for JTAS Online that was set in the Five States Era.

Be that as it may, I was looking through the equipment section just now and noticed that MgT features stunners. That would suit me even better than a laser pistol, because I've already equipped one of the other characters with a (TL11) laser pistol.

The TL12 stunner does 3d6 damage, weighs 500g, and has the standard 100 shot power pack. Max range is Short. Do you think you could work out a TL16 version for me?

Good idea Jame - I'll dig out your equipment list. The Tri-corder was built using Traveller5 rules. It should be compatible across the board.

Sounds like fun. Let's see if I can get close.

There's a couple of ways to go with this. One is a one-combat-session-use, disposable variety:

Mod Disp Stun Pistol-16, 0.44 kg, R=Short, Cr 90
TL16, B=-1, Dmg=3D + 1

Then there's an "anti-designator" stunner. What THAT means is up to you:

Mod Anti-Desig Stun Pistol-16, 1.48 kg, R=Short, Cr 540
TL16, B=3, Dmg=3D + 2

The Burden rating of 3 means it's bulky; it counts 4.48 kg towards encumbrance.

With a little bit of quality enhancements, here's one with remote-fire capability built in. "Safety" in this case is probably security settings related to remote fire, but it also probably means the thing knows who you are and won't shoot you.

Remote Heavy Stun Pistol-16, 0.71 kg, R=Short, Cr 2,100
TL16, B=1, Safety=+2, Dmg=3D + 1.

Finally, the beauty of the bunch, a Snub Stunner with the best range and best damage rating.

Ult Snub Stun Pistol-16, 0.26 kg, R=Medium, Cr 310
TL16, B=-5, Dmg=4D

This ones looks like a suitable gimmick for a PC. I think I'll balance the advantage by limiting the number of shots per recharge. 2 shots? 4? Something like that, I think.

All I can picture is a Drill Sergeant giving a briefing to a bunch of camouflaged troops/empty chairs.

:)

Biotech

A wearable biobot that mimics the look of a tuber, wraps around the wrist to act as an inertial navigation device. Can also be used to filter atmosphere if inserted in the throat (it'll crawl in if you go unconscious so you won't die). A small mouth allows it to talk to you if you are bored. Build in a translator if you are feeling generous.

And in the end it turned out to be the PC that wasn't chosen by any of the players.

She's an NPC ally now, so she will get a chance to use her nifty little gadget, but it won't be quite the same to the players, I suppose.
