Obsidian Portal anyone?

I use it, look to the link in my sig.

It's good, I've looked around, none of the sites are perfect.

Does anyone here use Obsidian Portal for gameplay?

What is your experience with it ~ good or bad?

Riik

I've used it for game play as both a player and GM. I like it, but it could be a lot better. The main problem is that it isn't designed for game play, but rather to keep a log of a game for the world to see.

RPOL is pretty good and with enough games that even though I might be interested in other games elsewhere it's not worth it, to me, to have yet another site to go to each day.

I think RPOL works better as a play-by-post platform, but Obsidian is great for keeping a game log for a livemeet game.

Problem is, as a GM I'm now tending to spend far more time fiddling with my game logs on OP than I am on session prep!

= unhappy PCs :-(

LOL. BTW, given our problems here with spam the last couple of weeks, I initially misread your name as "phila b bot" instead of (presumably) "phil abbot". Good thing I didn't report ya!

I have poked at Obsidian Portal, but I haven't put anything up there, yet, as it looks less inviting than Guild Portal. (Yes, Guild Portal is aimed at MMORPGs, but it's where the Official 30th Anniversary Classic Traveller Play-by-post game ended up a few years back and it worked fairly well.) I like my options using just the free portion of Guild Portal. (I had to set aside MyTU there for a bit, but will get back to it soon.)

Ha! I thought it was φ lab bot - a perfectly Travelleresque handle... ;)

BTW: On RPoL.net - the D/L GM option helps with logs.

What is the D/L GM option? IMO, I only put bare bones in the wiki unless somebody requests it or it is hidden info, usually nobody reads it.

Its an option Jase added in the upper right hand of each thread some versions back (it might just be DL - stands for Download).

Click it and you can have the complete thread formatted in various ways that can be quite useful for pasting into a single post or an external document.

OK. Phil is most likely talking about logs, like adventure logs, of which he has a huge amount, I see him updating them in my profile.

Yeah - on RPoL I've made those with the simple expedient of doing a D/L of separate threads and then editing them together into a shorter log...

For me, that is where the game is played, the forum feature isn't that great, I use it for other stuff. I keep the logs intact as that is the history of the adventure. I looked at RPOL, but it seemed like just a forum. I like the ability to check the sidebar, and to be able to fill out the items and wiki.

It could be better, imo this site should have a proper portal for online play, but OP had the nicest features I could find. Some people love the ability to edit the pages in css, which I don't do.

This site used to have a proper play-by-post feature. It's where our Official 30th Anniversary Classic Traveller game started. Now they just have the one forum room where it's a straight-up thread. :(

Have you looked at Guild Portal, Dragoner? I'm curious as to your opinion of the difference between the two.

I couldn't find any Traveller games on there, so I couldn't see yours. GP is more than 2x expensive than OP, plus you only get 750mb there while OP you get 5gb per campaign (unlimited), I like the characters and the wiki better, there is also a whole download feature to save the campaign. GP looks nice though, it has a lot of the same features and a nicer in campaign forum. IMO though something as a hybrid of the two would probably go over great, I'm not trying to convince anyone to go over there, just what I found by searching around on separate places to set up a campaign.

Here is what you get for $40 a year: http://www.obsidianportal.com/ascendant_membership

Ahhhh. You're willing to pay. I haven't gotten to that point yet. (Mainly because I haven't got things finished enough, yet.)

As for the Traveller games, the 30th Anniversary one was here. Mine is here, though there isn't much public in that one other than the Library. (We haven't started that game, yet, either.)

Before I was a GM, I was a player in Mustered out on Regina, and didn't pay. There are some nice things about GP, I think I like the logs plus forums better though, I'm more visual, so I have more pics. There are downsides though, like I wish I could do big attachments like my sector and world pdf's.
