Just another mad scientist project that escaped from the lab? Sci-fi is full of mad scientist and megacorp that toys with the devil since Dr Frankenstein(Alien, what number again?)
Just another alien race that we did not knew much about?
A fun part of Space based gaming universe is that you do not have to create closed or near closed universe. There is always another planet next door, and when you are master of the galaxy. there are all those other galaxies, and those ancient races...

I've borrowed a couple of ideas from WH40K, but Orks isn't one of them.

The closest thing I have IMATU is the Danin (from JG's Glimmerdrift Reaches sector) which I equate with the Droashav from "Lords of Thunder," which is to say, not very close at all.

You could always just use the Ithklur fairly straight up, only changing their actual appearance ...
