Popup Turrets

I downloaded the handy-dandy ship creation spreadsheet, but even after reading the THB on Ship Design, I am trying to understand how the weapon stats add up on the spreadsheet when using double popup turrets.

When I add a second plasma cannon to a double popup, it says I am adding another hardpoint.

Yet, when you configure a triple laser turret, no popup, the weapon stats add together, but the the double popup turret does not.

So, should I add the +3 to hit stats together for 2 plasma cannons like the Pulse Lasers do on the Triple turret setup?

Please fill me in...

Well, the spreadsheet you're using has got either an error (or errors) or a house rule :)

Popup turrets don't need more hardpoints, just cost more and take more space.

Lasers, Missiles, and Sand can all be mounted up to three per turret (needing a triple turret for mounting three). And the base turret is 1ton (popup doubles that to 2tons)

Plasma and Fusion guns may be mounted up to two per turret (needing a double turret for mounting two). And the base turret is 2tons (popup doubles that to 4tons).

Particle Accelerators may only be mounted one per turret (needing a single turret). And the base turret is 3tons (popup doubles that to 6tons).

In my opinion weapons should not be allowed to mix in turrets of different sizes. So no mix of Lasers and Fusion for example. But others (including Marc iirc) say it is allowed. I think it just makes things a mess and complicated while adding inconsistencies that then have to be handwaved.

A special case, the Particle Accelerator Barbette is really just a big turret but the letter of the rules don't allow it to be configured in a popup version.

I hope that clears up your question. If not just keep asking until someone makes it clear :)

Thanks for the feedback. I downloaded the ship design spreadsheet here off of COTI. I am going to work on the Excel calcs to see if I can fix the problem and if I do, I will send it to the original poster....

I reread the ship weapons section with what you said and I have a much clearer picture. You're right, I think the spreadsheet calculations are overlooking this and I will just add a second plasma gun to the turret and manually adjust the weapon stats. However, the USP calcs do work right, so it will just be a lil work on my part.

The whole turret setup feels a little odd when grinding the numbers. Especially when popups start to be involved.

Agreed though, don't give up on a post. Some of those views are bots, some are probably users who don't know but want to as well. One was me looking but no time to answer before being distracted and meaning to come back.

Don't worry about bumping a question if there's no answer after a couple days. There have been threads I've missed and wondered how I didn't see it the first time.

It's a hit and miss affair at times.
