Prefab Highport

Thanks for the warm welcome back. :)

30 ton Modules do have their limits.

I also was working on 1000 t module starport/outpost bases but got busy farming again.

Someone will have to pay for it. Assuming the colonists are willing to spend 3% of their GWP to pay for such a highport, you'll need a good deal more than a million people to amortize it over 40 years.

(I'm being vague because there are a lot of assumptions buried in my calculations. The actual figure I arrived at was 1.5 million people).

(I'm being vague because there are a lot of assumptions buried in my calculations. The actual figure I arrived at was 1.5 million people).

Not as Vague as I. Campaign set around time of Terrans discovery of Jump 3, Spreading towards rimward in case things go not so well with the Vilani, No Mention of how Terran Confed financing and building new fleets of Warships to boot. No mention of 5000 Dton tanker to help it cross larger gaps yet. Just think if I would have included cost of the carried craft as well.

On the Other Hand, if I am sending a Colonization Fleet Several Hundred Light Years I may as well send them as fully equipped as possible.

Plus the little things that may help like having SDBs with no Missile capability due to lack of resupply ability. :nonono:

Type W Barges.

I keep intending to make deckplans of type Ws and X-Boat tenders converted for core modules.

While not quite as useful as purpose built modules, both are much bigger, already have fuel, storage, power, electronics, and can use the manuver drive and jump drive to deliver themselves. For temporary or portable uses the drives can be kept, or they can be sold, increasing internal space even more.

The key advantage of course is that both are surplus. If I recall, a surplus type W at 100 DT costs what one basic purpose built module for a modular cutter costs, and you would need several modules to build anything useful. Add to money earned selling the drives and the cost differences are even more extreme.

For building Ports and bases, the X-Boat tender adds an already build maintenance bay.

Since both have internal bays, the Type W could carry it's own couplers and hardware. The barge could also carry either purpose built standardized cutter modules, or other building blocks to add to it's structure.

Devise a vehicle to land a Type W on an atmosphere or deploy it on a vacuum world, and you also have basic shelter and facilities for a planetary base camp, or even a down-port. You are back to needing an independent transport to deploy, but the initial hardware is still much less expensive.]

Finally, because both units are so inexpensive, and on perpetual imperial contracts, spare parts are unlimited and even major system components and structural members are available virtually everywhere.

Or even best of all, use salvaged barges and tenders as the core, be operational within hours of deployment, and then expand with modules and couplers designed to mate with them.

If there is interest, I can put some sample deckplans together. I already have some scratch notes.

Peace

Mr Tek
