The introduction to the Delphi Sector has more history of the Ral Ranta, and more information about people just across the border.
Subscribed last night and it's worth every penny. Thank you for the informative article and the good tip about JTAS.

Nice article. IMTU I've taken a rather different tack with Ral Ranta, though; decadent, mysterious, brutal, with tortuous internal politics, RR has a distinct whiff of the late Ottoman Empire about it. The Sick Man of the Hinterworlds, maybe

The Ottoman analogy is very apt. If you have the Anubians, the Gnivvi and the Nullia/Bruia axis play the roles of Britain, France and Russia, you’ve got a “Great Game” in Dravis and Cromar to complete the parallel.

Thanks.

The article is written from a distinctly Imperial point of view. To the Imperium, they are a pocket empire, being abused by one of the Imperial megacorps, which is too bad but no one is going to do anything about it.

From the Hinterworlds perspective, Ral Ranta is a large and powerful player. They are paranoid, distrustful of outsiders, particularly Imperials, and their leadership has dreams of the glory of the old empire. Sounds about perfect.

I too, labor in the fertile field of the Hinterworlds. Challenge issues #39, #44 and #52 have relevant information on the sector, I got my copy at the Traveller Trader. But if you’re expecting a Behind the Claw treatment you may be disappointed. #39 features lovely subsector by subsector maps (with UPP’s) of the Hinterworlds and a two page spread of the whole sector (mmm, Traveller centerfold). The summary of the history and politics of the region is relatively brief. There’s lots of stuff for the Referee to fill in himself. There’s not much canon to rub up against here, and that a good thing. I say, make it up! That’s what I’m doing. I’ve got my little homemade (home-edited) map and database rolling. My word is law!
Dammit, this failed for reasons that shall not be discussed. BUT I WANT TEWHILL TO TRY AGAIN!

On my fourth year of active campaigning in the Hinterworlds, and I now call it home... No other sector has so many forces working on it, and even if you want to go OTU, you will never run out of material.

For me,

Ral Ranta is the Ottoman Empire, or possibly besieged Romania in time of the Turks. They are about decline of a space government. I picture them almost flash gordon like, with flashy uniforms and individual pricipalities... an alignment of old warlords...

Gnivii are a mystery, but they are producing ships for all comers who have the money...

Anubians are Separatist Solomani Authenticists, thier culture is based on a mix of Hollywood Ancient Rome/Egypt and 70s Battlestar Galactica! It sounds silly but has turned out to be quite cool.

I also instituted the "Hex Marshal" program, a Hive sponsored Law Enforcement Arm where individuals of the right stuff arbitrate on local disputes and keep down interstellar crime.

Zombie thread resurrection

As part of a current project I had to come up with a bunch of stuff on the Ral Rantha. Using the listed UPP codes for systems within that 'nation' and, in keeping with the project, I made the Ral Rantha more of a cross between the KGB and mafia.
If you look at the worlds listed most have very low law levels. Many have next to no government as well. At the same time many are fairly technologically advanced (A+) in rating. Throw in a number of amber zones for good measure.
The result is a loose confederation of states that specialize in spying, sabotage, assassination, and other nafarious hijinx for anyone willing to pay a hefty fee for their services. The Ral Rantha states keep from being over run or involved in a war by simply playing both sides of the fence so to speak.
Everybody else uses them for their dirty work so everybody is equally splattered with mud. This means any one other state or nation, the Imperium included, would find that their own dirty little secrets got out and they'd soon be at war with half of known space. At the same time the Ral Rantha would unleash their spys, assassins, agents, terrorists and, other assorted nasties on whoever declared on them.
So, a gentleman's agreement exists to just leave them alone like the psyotic uncle and occasionally let them out of their part of space to take care of things nobody else wants or will take care of.

It makes for a nice source of all sorts of stuff and characters you can't readily throw into a game from elsewhere. Need good forgeries? How about a hit on somebody? A little corporate espinoage? The Ral Rantha will provide it at the right price with no questions asked....

Just don't wander into their part of space without being fully aware of what you are doing or else you might find your pants pulled down and a sudden overwhelming pain because they won't hesitate to do you given the chance.....

They are something like the whole world this anime is set in:
