Read Foundation

Anybody else have trouble reading Foundation? I wanted to read it because I never have. I tried reading it once when I was younger, but I never made it past the first couple of pages. I enjoyed 'I Robot' and 'Azimov's Mysteries', but as I was reading Foundation, I kept getting a flashback to the movie 'Live Free or Die Hard' when Bruce Willis and Justin Long (the kid from Galaxy Quest/Apple commercials) were riding along and CCR was playing on the radio:

Justin: "What? What? What are you doing? What is that?"
Bruce: "It's Credence. Credence Clearwater Revival. CCR. Classic Rock."
Justin: " I know what it is. It's old rock. It doesn't make it 'Classic'."

I just couldn't quite wrap my head around mathematical psychology and technology as a religion. And it was like: the Galactic Empire is going to collapse, but it won't be gone for long if we treat people like they are stupid and manipulate them every chance we get.

Is it just me?

Yeah, Tolkien took me a few tries and some maturity to get through too, but was well worth it in the end.

Foundation on the other hand I read voraciously and couldn't get enough, first time I got it and was quite young. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Perhaps it was a different kind of maturity?

Heh, you want a difficult read, try the Mission Earth decology by L. Ron Hubbard :) Not really recommending it, not really panning it either, it had it's moments but... Ten. Long. Books. :file_19: In the end I was just glad to be done.

...and why does this thread evoke such a deja-vu for me? Didn't we do this not very long ago? Or am I losing (a little more of) it?

What made me post about Foundation was reading another thread about someone reading Dune, and the LOTR comments followed that one, too.

Yup, exact same problem with Foundation. Not with any other Asimov books I recall too.

Had same problem with James P Hogan's hard science INHERIT THE STARS I bought years ago, several failed attempts to read it, shelved it a few years. Tried again and it became a much reread favorite. Just reread it on-line recently too.
