Sailing vessel construction rules

TL4 is the industrial age, isn't it? So, perhaps that's too advanced.
TL 4 is roughly 1860-1900. That would include both the early coal fired steam ships and the ultimate sailing ship, the Great Clipper Ships.

TL1, I believe, may also include rowed galleys and wimpy sails.
Coastal fishing boats remain nearly unchanged from the Bronze age (TL 1) to the introduction of diesel engines in the early 20th century (TL 5). So any small open boat from the late 1800's to early 1900's should work to give you an idea of a TL 1 boat.

Ireland had hide boats with small sails and Pacific Islanders use sailing canoes (both TL 0 - no metal fittings).

Example - the cannon. I think it would be best to piggyback off of existing rules.
Is there anything in B4 Mercenary that might work?

OK, boats have been around since TL0, with and without sails.

Ships roughly equivalent to Viking-era longboats are TL1.

Biremes and triremes (remember that Ben-Hur clip?) are TL2-ish.

And rigging that allows ships to tack against the wind are TL3?

Have you looked at the Wet Navy articles in Challenge (part 2 of the three part series is in Challenge 54 pg30) - which is a MegaTraveller design rules add-on? These three articles together give a pretty good coverage of wet navy designs and combat in MT from TL0 through TL15.

... and which were not included on either the JTAS CD (which stops at Challenge 36) or on the MT CD (which includes no Challenge Articles).

:( How sad is that. :(

I haven't been following the MT CD information since I have those in paper format. I can understand the frustration. :-(

Why doesn't the MT CD include Challenge articles? That seems odd to me (unless there is a Challenge CD coming out sometime).

Hmmmm... Travellers of the Spanish Main?

I like it. Just have to de-tech (ie, airraft becomes equestrian) a few of the Char-Gen tables and you are set.

Ooooh... Travellers of the Spanish Main. Yeah. Seventh Sea meets Traveller.

Travellers of the Kannikkarish Main...

Hey, why not. Might not even be a bad way to introduce people to the "Traveller System."

What careers do you need?

Army, Navy, Marine, Merchant, Rogue, Pirate, Explorer(Scout), Bureaucrat, Diplomat, Noble, Doctor... Hmm, that's 11, so room for one more say. Seems like most of that is already done.

Ship design gives players a taste for "Gearheadness." There's Book 2.

Islands are like planets (isolated and connected only by their port), so Book 3 becomes Islands and Adventures.

Actually, you could probably fit it into one LLB. And then tap into the media buzz around the last "Pirates" movie (like Wizkids did with their Pirates game).
