Sci-fi DVD Recommendations

I'd throw out anything related to stargate[...]

Stargate is soft sci-fi, but still much harder than Trek most of the time.

The first several seasons of SG1 rocked. Then there were several that were weak. Then several more that were good. It doesn't survive that long by doing it wrong...

SGA got a little flaky, but is a fun ride non-the-less.

SGU is the TNE of the Stargate line... those who like it seldom overlap with the fans of the others, it's much darker in tone, and doesn't feel much like the others.

Survivors and Jericho

I liked both of the survivors series but the actress who played Abby Grant in the 2008 version was the most compelling. Both versions of the story were good, I am american but I do like UK Tv.

Along the lines of survivors was a short lived show on american network television called Jericho which I kind of equate to survivors and firefly.

Both seasons of Jericho are currently on Netflix streaming but season 2 was cut short due to a writers strike.

No, I meant the Syfi Chanel series Eureka! Its just fun and a great mine for downside adventures.

I think I remember seeing ads for the show now.

And I didn't mean anything personal in my dislike of SG1; it was watchable, at times very fun, but I just found it more sitcom than scifi. I did watch much of it eventually though.

Vandread anime is really good. You can get it completely dubbed in english.

Yes. I think some of the best SF is being done in Japan in animation. For some reason I really liked Eureka 7, and I also liked "Paranoia Agent", but it's too expensive for me right now. :(

Bab-5 has lots of production values going for it, but no re-play value.

I purchased the "Logan's Run" TV series via Amazon, and it's an okay watch, if somewhat corny at times. An oldie that I highly reccomend is the original animated Superman serial that was shown in theatres. It's superhero stuff, but it's classic story telling with classic animation. Highly recommended.

Must admit I haven't re-watched Babylon-5, but I enjoyed it the first time round.

Not much commentary on Battlestar Galactica (reimagined). I wasn't keen, with memories of watching the original one back in the '80s(?), but ended up watching several episodes at a mates place & got hooked, causing many nights of lost sleep. I deliberately did not watch the final episode, I might when I re-watch the series :)

I have enjoyed all three trips through... but I've only watched season 5 twice... Season 5 is much less fun, and not essential.

Hmmm. My all time favorites.

Farscape.

With a name that rhymes with "Crichton", who knew?

;)

(I always liked playing "spot the Aussie" in that one - and a link to my rant about Farscape's premature close is available on the front page of my website.)

Sad to see Jonathan Hardy pass away recently.

No SF at the moment, but my (non-roleplaying) wife has really got into "Once Upon a Time"...

Talking about old TV SF, Mad Max (ie Mel Gibon) was in a show in the 70's that was played straight - and not dumbed down, either. Cheap sets (like early Dr Who) but reasonable plot & dialogue.

LOL, You caught me. I am however not an Aussie, but an Alaskan in California. (Go figure!). Also glad to meet another 'Scaper here on COTI.

Was sad to hear about Jonathan Hardy myself.

All I can find for Mel Gibson that early were guest roles the 1976 series The Sullivans (set in WW2) and Cop Shop (standard police show) [he was a student at the National Institute of Dramatic Art at the time, graduated 1977], and the 1981 series Punishment (set in a present-day prison, with Mel appearing only in the pilot episode).

There was a 1980 movie The Chain Reaction, about an accident at a nuclear-storage facility in Australia, but it was not really Sci-Fi. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080513/plotsummary

Seaquest dsv anyone? Lolz
Props for starhunter though is a decent show, but for definitive sci fi on DVD you can't pass up Blake 7

Hyperdrive is worth a watch. It's an SF Comedy series that ran for a couple of series. Not sure if some of the humour might be too local to translate across the pond.

My last time watching it through with my wife, I had to bow out in the middle of season 5. I just couldn't take watching it again. There are specific episodes I either skip or grit my teeth through, like the first couple of episodes from season 2, but there are a lot of great episodes and multi-episode stories.

I really like the show, in general, but things started going off the rails well before Crusade.
