Secret of the Ancients pt 2

HHHMmm...
Perhaps several Dryone are having psychic nightmares That lead them towards clues that bring them together to hunt for meaning. They have been genetic mutations, casteless and shunned by their societies. They have the abilities to learn faster and better than their peers. Their Psychic abilities are above normal and they feel compelled to search through space to find something...

Reminds me of Fiver in Watership Down.

Hmmm...that gives me an idea...

My pack of players were trying to find "The Ancients" during one of our more odd campaigns.

They lost track of an ex navy npc when they decided to take a break and go pirate hunting.

When they finally got back to the chase...over a year of game time later...I quietly asked...

"What would happen if you found what you were looking for...and it did not want to be found?..."

They found that the npc's ship was found "near" district 268, she now was kinda sorta amnesiac and had no memory of what had happened.

I had let her find little father [from the gurps traveller setting, he's supposed to be one of grandfather's grandsons that he..."missed"...I think you had to let him out of a pyramid thingie he had hid inside but I can't remember much of that adventure].

Anyhoo, I mercifully gave her a personality overlay turning a battle hardened imperial navy captain into a sweet and innocent coed. That and left hints that there had been some droyne technician style tinkering with her scout.

They were so paranoid that i had trouble keeping a straight face as they kept trying to double, triple, and even quintuple think little father's

One thing I've done to "Well Prepared" groups is have Yaskodray appear on their bridge in TL24 Battle Dress, despite the bridge being psionicly shielded... using a TL16+ teleporter system.

I'm moving on here Bill. The droyne must have succeeded where others failed to get the ship going. This could be due to their psionic abilities which, were necessary in order to properly pilot the unorthodox ancient's ship. Finding themselves telepathically in control of the vessel they subliminally take it 'home' to the new region of space, where Kafka47 says life has evolved in parallel. Maybe their first stop might be an ancient's shipyard that is fully automated and roboticised. Enabling a complete overhaul and a spanking new ship of dreams to explore this uncharted territory.

Droyne traders reputedly operate close to home so to speak. Putting them in the region of the spinward main of the marches, including the rebellious Ilelish sector. This could include the possibility of their course being tracked by imperial scout service if not the imperial navy especially when the droyne crew locate the ancient's ship. Which the authorities might already be well aware of and monitoring.

If this was the case, this uber-ship has previously confounded all attempts by scout researchers to power it up let alone pilot it. Awaiting our psi-droyne's arrival with whom the ship effortlessly reveals it's workings perhaps through telempathy, telepathy and dreams. Hence, an explanation for those psychic nightmares and the raison detre for the socially drifting droyne.
I don't know what anyone else thinks but how does the idea of fashioning the ship after Iain Banks' 'culture' model sound?
That way , really far out ancient's theories and technologies could be fleshed out over the framework of the ship and its steadily revealed TL++ design and operation, enacted through the psionically interacting droyne.

I'm picking up the ball and running with it here. With regards to the farther reaches of space I was thinking of a reason for those nightmares and the specific genetic signature of our droyne adventurers. As we know the major races were created out of ancient's genetic engineering. What if , in our uncharted realm, the same principles have been applied only to genetic manipulation of more exotic stock than humanity? I.e. the region is populated by a parallel universal ecology of comparative monstrosities , bearing more resemblance to bacteriological and viral morphologies which the ancient's have attenuated according to their own ineffable plan!

To continue the thread, it could all unravel that the droyne were genetically 'signalled' to discover this parallel reality . The ship being a magic carpet ride, so that the master-plan is realised. This being the introduction of a new species of life into this weird ecology, namely the droyne ,who by simply trying to stay alive in this region - drive the monsters to extinction. The annihilation of these mutations gone wrong being the overall intention of 'grandfather'. Perhaps the droyne introduce an infection or simply eliminate one or more of the top predators within the new ecology. The crew at first horrified at their interference suddenly enlightened by the true creator's hand guiding the events of time all along.
They achieve a kind of higher state of being from these events and transmute into their inner potential evolutionary perfection. At last understanding the mind and will of the creators they themselves become as like unto the creators.
I hope I'm not hogging this thread but I like this idea and I could definitely see an adventure if not a campaign in this story. If Kafka47 agrees I would love to kick it off as a collaborating referee. The thing writes itself!
