What if artificial intellegence was developed before the Twilight War?
There is a prediction that computers will reach human-level intelligence by 2027 AD, this is not far from the later period where the Twilight War occured.
What if the development of AI and the Twilight War were two related developments. Say for instance that AI computers were developed in government laboratories and a number of electronic human-level personalities infected the internet. What if these AIs were in conflict with each other, one group plotting to take over the world from humanity and another group of AIs plotting to stop them, what if this conflict resulted in the Twilight War? The good guy AI were trumphant and managed to save humanity, but humanity was kept ignorant of that fact, and the AIs planted "evidence" that the war was in fact started by humans. Meanwhile after the war, the AIs hid in what was left of the internet, there they bidded their time and spied on mankind. During the age of recovery and times thereafter when humans attempted to build more AIs, the secret AIs sabotaged their projects, and after a while the AI programs would appear to go crazy, but in fact they were infected by viruses produced by the secret AIs.
Some of the AIs took a physical form in the shape of android human robots, they and their cohorts built a secret cave where all their equipment and new generations of AIs are formed. There task is to prevent the humans from developing new AIs and to discourage their development. The secret is not perfectly kept, sometime humans do stumble onto these secret AI facilities also run by AIs, this is where the PCs come in. Even in the 24th century, not everything is connected to the internet, in fact with the settlement of the human colonies on other worlds, it has become harder and harder to the AIs to monitor the development of other AIs by humans in far away places. The internet does not reach out across interstellar distances, where the speed of communication is only as fast as the fastest starship. The AIs need some human agents, they got some humanoform robots, but they can't go everywhere and with the properly equipment, they can be distinguished from humans, so the need to enlist the support of human agents, to investigate reports of secret laboratories developing independent AI capacity on distant planets, AIs which may in the secret AIs opinion, represent a dire threat to the human race.
