Seeking "Atlas of the Imperium"

I dunno, it has a nice cover...

It's worth noting that I may be nuts, but I'm not that nuts.

Of course, I did volunteer to jump out of planes before I'd ever been on a plane...

There does seem to be a certain amount of crazy randomness to the prices though. The high water mark appears to be the $202.50 price. This last weekend, auctions for two copies closed.

One, a rather nice looking copy sold for $61.00.

The second, one whose cover was only in good to fair condition, sold for $96.50 about 8-12 hrs later! I find the difference rather inexplicable except for the fact that I did include GDW in the title and I'm willing to ship overseas (the winning bid came from the UK).

:D

PS: The weirdest eBay experience that had was a very early auction, when I was selling off my brother's old anime robot toys (with his permission). There was this one toy that didn't attract any bids for 5 days, *but* during those 5 days, this guy kept on trying to get me to cancel the auction and sell it to him straight for $100. I had no idea of the value of the toy, but I couldn't understand why he didn't just bid the $1.00 for the toy. Eventually, the toy sold for somewhere in the $200-$300 range!

There just aren't that many truly rare things out there for Traveller. What's a complete set of JTAS, 1-24, going for? Early copies are near mint (bought later, when I wasn't 13 and had a job) and fair to good for the later issues, which got used more.

OMG? What's an OMG (Other than Office Management Group)?

Enjoy.

It's "just" the script; you can find "St George & the Dragonet" on one of the Dr Demento anniversary CDs. Everyone should have this skit written in their hearts and on their heads.

The Atlas of the Imperium does have one of the nicest covers to don a CT product but 202US$ is way too much!!

Hunter, you would consider getting the rights to some of the CT covers to adorn T20 but without so much text? The title of the work could just take a small spot above the image...

The price for the Atlas is a bigger ripoff when one considers that Seeker Gaming Systems is sometime going to release a colour atlas (which presumable is going to contain all UPPs) and would be more than selected sectors in squares.

Actually Ron,
I was the poor sucker who bought that Atlas of the Imperium off you.Very hard to get hold of in the U.K but you're right, they are a bit of a disappointment when you open them up.By the way is it supposed to have the grey 'borders' around some of the star systems or is that pencil?!!!

I don't remember seeing any pencil markings when I looked through the copy of Atlas of the Imperium that I sold you. Can the grey borders be erassed easily with a normal eraser?

</font>[/QUOTE]Before trying an eraser I'd have a look at it from a low angle with a bright light on it. If its shiny its probably pencil, if not its ink (as in printed that way, for whatever reason). Pencil (graphite) is usually a little shiny.

I haven't got the Atlas with me at the mo but i'll check that out when i can and get back to you.If it is pencil then i've made an expensive error!
Cheers

Please do let me know if there are pencil marks and the quantity of marks.

This discussion prompted me to dig into my Traveller closet (second generation to Fibber McGee's closet, so it took me awhile) for my copy of Atlas of the Imperium. And the printing I have shows grey, graphite-looking borders around some stars. It really looks to me like faint printing in those places; the entire book suffers from black-to-gray values. And my copy is in Fine to Mint condition, no water stains or sun bleaching.

But if I were you, I'd still try that "holding it to the light" thing to see if it shines like graphite.

Evidently these books are rare, but I find them great for wrapping spotted owl and passenger pigeon carcasses.

Thank you for looking at your copy. I vaguely recall the gray borders around some stars, but I don't recall the borders looking like pencil marks (shiny and irregular).

Boycey, I didn't own the copy that I sold you for very long (it was a pure speculation play). While I would be willing to refund part of your money if the condition was other than I described, I would not be willing to do so if you decided that you had made an expensive mistake because the Atlas of the Imperium is just a bunch of dotmaps, particularly since I indicated that the atlas contains dotmaps in my description.

Ron

Hi Ron,
I've just checked the Atlas and held it up to the light as suggested and there are nine pages that have pencil 'borders', several quite substancial.
I must admit it was my fault with regards to not fully realising what dotmaps were when bidding but i probably would've bid anyway.Although at the moment the Atlas is for personal use I will probably wish to sell it on at some point. What sort of amount were you thinking as regards a part refund?

How about $9 for the nine pencil borders? Seems reasonable to me since it's just pencil and a month ago, you were happy with the purchase (at least according to the feedback).

Ron

I don't have the Atlas, and I have no intention of paying the going rate for it. However, I would very much like to see what it has for the Trojan Reaches, as I have been led to believe it is at least somewhat different from what is in TD20.

So, assuming Hunter does not see this as a copyright violation, would someone be willing to send me a scan of that single page?

Thanks.
