Should DaveShayne Re sub to the TML?

Should DaveShayne Re sub to the TML?

Some time ago the TML had a problem with being identified as a source of spam. As a result my ISP kindly choose to stop letting me receive those mesages.

I sent a message about the problem and the response I received seemed to suggest that if I mellowed out for a week or so th problem would fix itself.

It didn't.

But it was the buildup to the hliday season so I figured I'd resub after the new year when I actually had time to read the messages and maybe even respond to a few. Well the new year came and went and I didn't find myself missing the TML except late at night when I find myself overcome with insomnia and have already perused all of the message boards I frequent two or three times.

So the question becomes:

Should I re-subscribe to the TML and go through whatever it takes to get my ISP to de-blacklist the TML or am I happier just wistfully looking back on that chapter in my life?

Help me COTI; your my only hope.

Depends of what YOU want to do...

Some times the TML has over 15 e-mail/days, but other times (like right now) 2-3...

I actually find it weird that I didn't get one email from the TML since yesterday... network problem?

Anyway, it's a personal choice, but an ISP that blocks mailing-list emails should be kicked in the groin with LOT of forces. It's now like the TML had headers like "Make $$$ FAST" or "Get a Bigger P**** Easily"

Well sure. And most of the time I don't miss it but every once in a while (like last night) when I'm rather bored I think about signing on again.

That would be the digest right? The TML I know had a lot higher traffic than that in individual messages.

Apparently there was a problem with an open port or channel or something that a spammer had latched onto that allowed it to use travelercentral as a remailer or something. So you can't really blame the ISP for that one.

Aye aye... I prefer the Digest, since you get less mail.

It's called an Open Relay and is mostly EVIL.

Some ISP uses systems like Real Time Black Hole etc. to enquire about mailing sources. If said source is flagged as Open Relay, then it's put in Filing Cabinet #13... Thrashed.

Maybe they fixed it and your ISP's system just wasn't updated.

You'd have to check up on this.

I'd say go for it. I use an email system that allows me to setup rules so that all TML email gets tidied away in a separate folder - that way I'm not constantly sifting through it, but I can still read individual emails.

Sometimes the signal to noise ration goes way up, and sometimes no one responds to even the most interesting threads ... but it is still a great source of ideas, and access to more official Traveller authors than you will get anywhere else.

Aye, that's the bleeder.

My understanding was there were actual spam reports not just that the relay was detected.

Which was the state of affairs back in december when I chose to wait and see.

I'd suggest re-subbing to the digest version. It's pretty painless to scan through the subject headers once every couple-three days looking for interesting topics, and there's usually 1 or 2 worth-reading posts per digest. Only problem with reading this way is it's a lot harder to actually participate in the discussions, but I do enough participating here and on JTAS that I'm satisfied to remain a lurker on the TML.
