This is a serious canon question for the community.

As everyone knows, a few of the Digest Group Publications (DGP) are not widely available. MT was heavily outsourced to DGP, but not everything from their collection is available. These wonderful MT stories like mothball fleets, and Vland sector are available mostly through second hand ebay purchases. I know I am missing a few magazines and won't pay $60+ on ebay.

As I understand it, the new owner of DGP copyrighted has been reluctant to do any releases. Thinking that there is no market for it.

Should DGP articles stay canon?
1. Yes, difficult to find or not.
2. No, if not available then recreate it.
Would you but an updated...
3. I would buy an updated MT CDRom with DGP articles
4. I would buy a complete works DGP CDROM
5. I would not get DGP articles

For those who might not even know what GDP titles are available (or which titles are DGP products), could you post a list?

My choice is not available. (Yes, it is OTU canon).

With this new-fangled communication medium called 'the internet' it really isn't so difficult for an author to find out what has been established by DGP.

Yes it is canon, that should not change. The DGP material is some of the best Traveller material ever produced, that cannot change. I wish it was available. I wish the unfinished material, even in it's unfinished form, was available--especially titles like The Black Duke, and Manhunt.

With respect to canonicity of the DGP material, I would vote no with no effort to recreate it, but that was not an option of the poll.

I am most definitely NOT a fan of MegaTraveller or the whole Rebellion concept, so I have no interest whatsoever in purchasing any of the articles.

Much of their work was applicable to CT and the pre-collapse Third Imperium, and was always very well done.

I already own all of their published products in dead tree format, so I wouldn't be interested in re-releases of their work.

Huh? You did not vote? Would you like to be more specific.

I'm just not that impressed with the majority of the DGP product line. It has its high points but I found the bulk of it to be uninteresting or simply needless detail tacked on to what already existed. But that's just me.

This is a request to see if we can get these CDrom'd, downloadable, or whether the community is indifferent.

I would think Roger Sanger is aware of the interest in the DGP IP and has been for 20 years so I'm not really sure what's going to change. I hope for your sake and that of everyone else who loved the DGP material so much that you succeed.

I'll second all of that that whole-heartedly. I would by a DGP CD-ROM in a heartbeat, even though I have all of their publications as physical copies.

I would not put the material on an updated MT CD-ROM, however, as the DGP material covers both CT and MT. If it is not going to be on its own CD-ROM, it should perhaps go on an updated verion of one of the Apocrypha CD-ROMs (alongside the FASA and Keith Brothers works, perhaps).

DGP stuff is fantastic--my favorite. Yes, it should remain in the canon. Plus, almost all DGP stuff is usable in both MT and CT.

I think DGP is a critical to own as any GDW product. In many ways, I think DGP's stuff is better than GDW's, except when DGP wrote for other companies (the MT core rules, or Robots Book 8).

EDIT: I like hard copies. I prefer them to CD-ROMs and pdf downloads. If available, I'd buy a softbound book of DGP material. I'd buy several DGP softbounds. I'd love to have all of the Travellers' Digest in a series of books similar to the FFE JTAS books, and the same goes for the four MegaTraveller Journals.

While I think a lot of the material should stay canon, how much can be used by new authors? How close can new publishers come to the DGP material without entering the realm of possible copyright enfringement?

I voted not to keep it canon, but I would rather like to see some of the stuff that doesn't make a lot of sense retconed. But that goes more for other material than DGP products. Its more of a 'fix canon' than 'chuck in the bin and start fresh' stance.

First, Thanks for today's start to this poll and all of the comments! Hopefully, DonM and Marc can use results like this to fuel some direction. COTI is only a small part of the Traveller community.

timerover51, I think you might be missing a point. The DGP material produced useable background and ships for Rebellion TUs, but could be used in a non-Rebellion TU. We see some recreation already occurring. So, I did not consider that option. We already have GT which features a non-Rebellion OTU future. Even with GT, DGP impacted a lot of canon. The history of Depot Corridor is an example, DGP called it Enders. The present Wiki has a completely different view.

I already have an updated MT & DGP CD-Rom

I got tired of waiting on Godot, so I am updating everything myself. I'm not done yet, but I have the important stuff done (PM, RM, IE, RC, WBH, SOM, NFC, etc with the latest errata). The others are on my plate, but at a lower priority. My priority right now is a consolidated Craft Design chapter (the RM chapter + Wood and Wind, Steel & Steam + 1 Small Step)

So I don't know if I would buy an updated MT CD-rom.

I'd probably get a DGP cdrom (for completeness), but I have already stripped out, reformatted, and consolidated most of TD content into additional chapters for my manuals.

If any of you want to "roll your own" manuals, I uploaded the templates over in the file library about a year ago (Post #10). If anyone finds a problem with them, let me know.

I second this option. While I will gladly buy the CDRom, I do prefer hard copy.

I will take the opposite tack on format, and say that while hardcopies are nice for those who want them, I prefer good quality searchable PDFs. I have one bad shoulder and would prefer not to injure the other one toting stacks of books, if I could instead just carry my laptop.

As for the question about articles and canon: I haven't read enough of the articles to vote on that, and don't care much one way or the other about canon as I am always ready to adjust to what makes sense to me.

As for DGP books, I might trade a kidney for a good PDF of The Starship Operator's Manual. I would probably feel the same about World Builder's Handbook, except that I already have it in hardcopy and will eventually make my own PDF for personal use only. :D
