Why won't the folks holding the DGP rights allow reprints? Is there some Galactic Pissing Contest between DGP & FFE?

No, between Roger and the Fans. Well, actually, no, Just Roger and himself.

My understanding is that the rights holder thinks that they are worth more than Marc has been willing to pay. I've heard that Marc and Roger have spoken at length about this. Obviously, they can't come to terms.

There's more to it than that. Apparently, Roger became disabused of the value of the IP, to the point that he is no longer willing to believe it has any value.

Don and Marc have been trying to convince him to let it get into a CD.

Some money is better than no money. Roger bought the rights probably thinking there was more value there. If he makes more doing other things than this, it is water under the table. But of course, we speculate publicly.

Whatever the reason. I am hoping this thread gives DonM & Marc a bit more. Most DGP is available. It's just a small portion that is not readily available.

Whether a person wants it in their TU or not is not important. It's nice to have the compete Traveller RPG history available.

May one ask how much this rightsholder Roger paid and when he paid for the rights to the DGP material?

low 5 figures is what Rodge used to cite, for both the DGP name and it's IP.
Then I guess he will need to sell a lot more than the 39 copies that people have expressed an interest in purchasing in the poll. ;)

I voted thumbs down not so much because I don't like DGP products, but because it seems unreasonable to expect potential contributors to adhere to a canon that is generally unavailable and has been for a very long time.

It should only be held as canon if and when it is available as a pdf (since a print run is unlikely).

I agree

And I reiterate - the option that makes the most sense is not available to vote on - a cd with all DGP Traveller related products on it.

I would buy such a product the second it became available - I would even fund a kickstarter to a similar level of backing as T5. I have all the stuff dead tree but i would love an electronic version.
I also believe that DGP is canon.

If he REALLY thought it has no value then the only reason to refuse is petty. If it does have value, wouldn't it be nice to find out what he wants for it?

If it was available, what would Marc want for licensing it to "someone"?

These are most likely the questions that need answering.

Even pdfs on Drive Thru would net him something. From what I've seen on eBay make a limited print run and auction it there.:D

Part of the problem is that the DGP stuff is entailed - being a derivative work, and not his own creation, not derived from something he has rights to, he has to have the rights holder of the source work give permission.

Namely, Marc.

Marc doesn't own the DGP rights.
Rodger can't use the DGP rights without permission from Marc.
Rodger won't license Marc.

Note that Joe and Gary can, eventually, recover their assignment of rights under US Copyright law (35 years post sale - which was about 1993, IIRC, so around 2028).

Option 3: Someone ponies up 5 figures to buy the rights from Roger, then works with Marc for getting the CDR made.

I am starting to think that we either get this DGP material republished in some form, or decanonize the material. Having canonical material that is not readily available, is not acceptable.

And, considering that much of the Corridor sector's rebellion history is DGP material, it would create an opportunity for some of us to retconn that history :smirk:

BTW: the plural of Apocalypse is Apocalypses,

If the rights holder for DGP is willing to sell and the price is acceptable then take it to the Traveller community via a Kickstarter.

Interesting idea. Marc should consider it.

In the meantime, let's continue to ask fans to VOTE in this poll. It gives the project fuel.

I would be willing contribute to a Kickstarter for the purpose of purchase of DPG rights, preferably for permanent acquisition/revert to Mr. Miller and not merely a license for a limited period of time. Excuse me if I do not know the correct terms, copyrights/publishing is not my forte.

I would be willing to contribute $100.00 for this purpose.

Seconded. I would pay the same.
