So... Psion?

Spinward Scout

SOC-14 5K
Baron
The book, not the member. :)

Who picked it up, and do you like it?

I'm still trying to decide if I'm disappointed or not.

Campaign Level and Psi Points is a great addition.

Latent Psionic Potential Modifiers is very open to interpretation, Referee fiat, or munchkinism (tho it adds nothing to your Psi Strength). Adds a dimension to the character background, but seems confusing.

New training options!

The Psion Careers are so detailed that I haven't gone through it all yet. Tho it says Special is a Psionic Talent at the bottom of page 13 and I can't find it anywhere else in the book.

But there's glaring omissions in the powers section:

there's Temporal Manipulation but not Psychometry/Premonition/Prescience
- Tactical Awareness could be part of that, possibly

no Psionic Healing of others, none, zero, not even Empathic Healing from T4
- which is a staple of Sci-Fi

No Mind Linking/Bonding/Shared Senses
- but there is a Mind Switch which is cool!

No Mind Domination
- for those aspiring to be Emperor of the Galaxy

No Dowsing or any kind of SeekerSense
- this is the Direction power from T4

No Body Stetch/Sculpt
- would have been useful in social situations! :)

Machine Symbiosis is very nice.

Personal Enhancement powers could have easily been put under Awareness

Projection is almost all Telepathic type powers except Out of Body Experience which could go under Clairvoyance.

Aura Perception (Read Aura) is a neat idea but very close to Life Detection that the two could have been combined - also does anyone else see a use for Project Aura with the description it describes (I don't see any use for it)

Psionic Attacks and Psionic Defense could have had their powers under Telepathy and Telekinesis - it even says it in a few of the descriptions. And oddly reminscient of AD&D 1st Edition Psionics Attack/Defense modes. Psychic Absorption is kinda funky - pay one point to absorb one point for your own use. Huh?

Ship Integration is new and interesting. Fold Space - 'nuff said.

So is Tapping.

I don't have a use for Dimensional Manipulation or Temporal Manipulation, so I'm not touching them. Also says Temporal Manipulation is good for Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog.

But there's almost no need for some of these additional Talents (as I showed above)

There is a Creating New Powers section, tho. I'll have to get on that!

The section on Psionic Trauma is a most needed addition - haven't finished reading it, tho.

New Psionic Equipment: (I won't list them all)
Extra Special Psi Drug - for when you meet that extra special someone in a dark alley
Psi Enhancer - very cool
Personal Psi Battery - very much needed
Levitation Throne - I want one

I probably won't use the Mind Ships section.

I can't say it's not worth the money, because there's a lot of stuff in this book. I just wish they would have done more research on Psionics in SciFi.

Absolutely ignorant of what ever the heck Strontium Dog is. SO, why would I care about a time bomb? Unless it's a literal "Time" bomb as in Water Balloon. That would kinda suck Beavis.

Strontium Dog - An Explanation

Just four words.

Strontium. Dog.

Time. Bomb. :)
It's a reference to the 2000AD strip by Wagner and Ezquerra, conceived at about the same time as their other great oeuvre, Judge Dredd - back in 1977, roughly the same time as Traveller as a matter of fact. :)

Strontium Dog is primarily a series about one Johnny Alpha, an alpha dog if ever there was one. It's a long story with a complicated back history, but basically in the far future, after a dirty nuclear war where strontium-90 fallout had wrought harsh mutations among the human population and brought about a new form of bigotry of "norms" against "muties," jobs for mutants became exceedingly limited. There were only two careers open to mutants: crime, and bounty hunting.

Mutant bounty hunters are known as Search / Destroy Agents, but their famous badges bearing the letters "SD" quickly got them the epithet of "Strontium Dogs."

John Alpha is, in Traveller terms, a limited Psion with a range of powers including a form of clairvoyance which enables him to "look through solid objects with X-Ray vision" (his vision is stopped by lead) and to look inside a man's soul to weigh his guilt (a form of Telepathy / Probe), not to mention the power of Mind Attack/Unlock, which he once turned against a necromancer called Sabbat.

He also has a form of Awareness / Suspended Animation that has brought him back from the brink more than once.

Renowned for his spooky "Alpha -emitting eyes" that constantly glow, his favourite weapons include the Westinghouse blaster and the Westinghouse-designed time bomb, a device capable of projecting a field which casts the immediate area a set distance forwards or backwards in time. It's lethal, because it doesn't project the affected area through space; the object may appear two days in the future, at a point where the planet has moved on, and any people caught in the time bomb's blast will then, of course, be in the middle of deep vacuum.

Other weapons include the beam polariser, which effectively acts as the Energy Kinesis/Luminokinesis/Disrupt Light power, drawing in and absorbing energy weapon discharges.

Psion just paved the way for the Strontium Dog setting. OH yes. :)

LOL I think I've just done a spot of advertising for the product. Consider me a convert: I love Strontium Dog even more than Judge Dredd. It had this undeniably Western feel to it at times ... :)

Speaking of which, have you tried Project Steel? We are running Camp Bravo as Deadwood :)

So, then, back to Psion.

Does anyone here think they can get some mileage out of it? I know I can, because I'm wired that way - my Traveller adventures have always been skewed towards the weird somewhat, but then I've preferred the worlds of M Night Shyamalan and Quentin Tarantino to the likes of The Longest Day and Saving Private Ryan. :)

Would it be possible to get a breakdown of the careers? When I looked in the preview, it showed the Psionic Drifter career, and it looked to be a straight cut-and-paste of the Drifter career; I'd like to know if the others were better.

Careers Breakdowns

Without going into too much detail, the career options listed are:-

- Dedicated Psion Agency (Research / Pursuit / Liaison)
- Psion Agents (Law Enforcement / Operations / Corporate)
- Psion Army (Intelligence / Infantry / Special Forces)
- Psion Drifter ( Barbarian / Wanderer / Scavenger)
- Psion Navy (Line/Crew / Engineering/Gunnery / Psion Auxiliary)
- Psion Rogue (Thief / Mind Stealer / Corsair ya'ha'rr)
- Psion Scholar (Student / Scientist / Physician)
- Psion Scout (X-Boat / Survey / Exploration)
- Underground Psion Network (Resistance / Fifth Columnist / Saboteur)
- Temporal Agency (Time Warden / Time Monitor / Timestream Nomad)
- Inter-Dimensional Agency (Troubleshooter / Dimensional Agent / Wayfarer)
- Psion Spacefarer (Pilot / Navigator / Integral)

What no Psi- Marines?

Just a quick look through Psion Agent and comparing it to the Pocket Edition, there's a DM to enlistment pertaining to Psi, one Psi related mustering-out benefit, one Psi related rank benefit, and only one skill related to Psi under the Skills and Training section. Other than that, Mishaps and Events are mostly related to Psi. So, at least for that one, chargen is for the most part the same as the normal career of the same name.

Nope, no Psion Marine.

OKay, got it, perused it, will read in depth later.
1. already noted, no healing, overlooked I suppose.
2. also noted, no psychometry, nothing in the way premonitions or foretelling, fortune telling.
3. In my experience, psycometry is closely related to aura reading.

Will post later, work to be doen, gotta earn my wages :)
