To me it's all about opportunity,

The ref rolls a pirate encounter in that class E starport system and the PC's win the engagement but now have two derelict hulls lashed together.

The players now have the challenge of maintaining life support while removing and replacing drives from one hull to the other, the ride pimping has begun but it's an adventure with all sorts of problems to be resolved and a sense of satisfaction of doing it yourself, delivering your cargo and making it back to a regular yard where the chief engineer complements them on their fine work, before ripping it all out and doing a proper install. (Yard work paid for by the salvage on the pirate hull they jumped lashed to.)
At the end of the day their A1-Free trader is now a A2 Far trader with payments still of the A1 version. Oh and all sorts of minor player requests built in.
