Social Combat in CT...

I'm dealing with this now in a CT game.. I keep trying to use Interrogate-3 (My 6 term Diplomat likes to 'interview' people) to find out of the patron is 'displaying any indicators of deception' (micro expressions, nervousness, etc.), and the Ref just ignores the roll and expects me to figure it out based on the conversation.

Anyway, I went back to my stateroom to get my pistol. If the only thing this Ref understands is combat, then he is about it get it.

recently while looking through some stuff on the internet I came across some info on an old RPG called "Freedom Fighters", by J. Andrew Keith that had some rules for dealing with "verbal interactions" that might be relavant.

Sounds something like the rules from the Keiths' 'lost supplement' Scam: Rogues in Space Vol. II.

Ok, I've looked these two up and I'm very interested. I don't mind two UPPs, you'll only use one at a time; it's almost like having a 'flip-side' to your character. If only I'd known about these books first time round...

Can anyone tell me for sure if these two works contain essentially the same rules?
Is one of them more detailed than the other?
Which one was published first?
Why is Scam: Rogues 'lost'?
How 'lost' is it?
What percentage of the Freedom Fighters rules does the 'social combat' section comprise?
How many pages?

All info, references, links gratefully received. :)

Yep, that's a more readable green, Aramis. :)

Thanks in advance guys.

THe "lost Manuscripts" were books that the Brothers Keith never brought to a finished enough state for publication under their Gamelords Ltd. Label. THey eventually allowed Cargonaut Press to publish them in a limited run as spiralbound ashcan editions. They were somewhat rough, essentially late alpha or early beta.

Hi,

I can't speak for the "Scam: Rogues in Space", but the "Freedom Fighters" stuff looks like it was copyrighted in 1986. The Verbal Interaction Rules extend from pg 72 to 80 of "The Characters" booklet (which is 80 pgs long), though a search on verbal interaction brings up a bunch of hits and references to it throughout the rest of this booklet.

There is a second booklet included in the PDF entitled "The Resistance" deals mostly with regular combat, equipment, vehicles and game mastering and is 96 pages long, plus another 58 pages of tables, charts and an intro scenario. So the Verbal Interaction rules are about 10% of the booklet on developing "Characters" book but only about 3.45 of the full PDF.

I guess some issues to consider in trying to use these type rules in a Traveller setting though is that the stuff in Freedom Fighters is written around a percentile system and they require additional character attributes (I think in the game each character has a total of fifteen - including strength, stamina , dexterity, agility, health, intelligence, memory, wit, perception, will, appearance, charisma, luck, talents, and motivations).

Hope this info helps.

Regards

PF

Thanks guys. :)

I'll have a think about whether Freedom Fighters is worth the investment for those few pages. It sounds like Scam would be, but it looks like it's another of those out-of-print, copyright-straitjacketed affairs that are the bane of Traveller gaming. :(
