Solar Flare from High Passage #1

Apologies if this has already been posted, but I couldn't find it.

Is there a writeup for the starship Solar Flare found in the adventure The Solar Flare Mystery in High Passage #1?
Specifically, details on size and performance?

Interestingly, no. The article has deck plans and detailed descriptions of all the rooms, but there are no statistics on the ship whatsoever.

Don't be afraid. That sounds like fun!

Post what you do know about the ship, and the rest of us can dissect it.

How many deck squares has the ship, approximately (a little slop is fine). Also, how many squares has the bridge?

How many squares have the drives? Are they all a big mess, or are there identifiable sections for each drive?

Just a guess

I think it is a Class M with some changes. 600 ton hull, 83 tons of drives, 20 ton bridge, 3 tons of computer would be the standard parts. The fuel decks are undefined enough I didn't analyze those. The rest ie. casino, labs, shops are not in Classic Traveller.

If at first you dont suceed..

From the cover Solar Flare MR AA1321-00 (not sure the numbers have any meaning) square count approximately 1214 therefore 607 tons more or less, not counting fuel. Bridge 20 tons. The computer is in 2 areas 2 tons at near the bridge and 1 ton near the engineering area. Approximately 88 tons of drives not differentiated enough as to type. There is a life boat bay that should be 20 tons that I count as 16.
If I make it 800 tons that could be drives HHH for J2 M2 P2 and yielding 85 tons of drives since some squares are incomplete that might work. If the bridge computer is counted on its own ignoring the one near engineering that would make the performance possibly make sense. The ship is basically intended to be a casino so I am not sure the performance would be reasonable in that context.

Yes, I think we're looking at an 800t hull. J3M1P1 on a 600t hull would displace around 83 tons, and require more than 180 tons of fuel.

J3M1P1 on an 800t hull would displace well over 100 tons.

Therefore, I think you're right -- it's a Jump-2, Maneuver-2, Power Plant-2, 800t ship.

Assuming no problems with takeoff and landing on worlds with more than 1G gravity, merchant ships would usually not have maneuver drives higher than 1. It costs money and it reduces payload and it doesn't save a lot of time on the trip between world and jump limit.

Totally agree. Which makes this design interesting -- there are very few combinations of drives that result in the ballpark of 88 tons; J2M2P2 appears to be closest.

Oh, there's a specific engineering tonnage to be met? I didn't realize that. An M2 drive would be unusual for a merchant, but not so much so that it's more than a bit odd. Certainly nowhere near unbelievable. There could be reasons why 2G was desired in the original design.

It allows shaving about 1/4 a day on travel times, and some GM's don't let 1G ships take off from size 8+ worlds...

I thought this might happen; step away from the board for a day to go to work and somebody would analyze the thing for me.
I hadn't gotten as far as counting all the squares to compute the tonnage, but the 800-ton J2M2P2 sounds like a good basis to work from.

Thanks, all.

Nothing near that saving for an average jump limit. Even for a size 8 world the difference is 108 minutes (each way, so 3.6 hours total). And it's true that some GMs houserule takeoffs from large worlds, but the RAW don't mention the problem at all. Likewise, worlds inside solar jump limits would allow greater savings for 2G drives, but the RAW also ignore the existence of solar jump limits completely.

Can we make it J3M1P3?

If I break down the side view and try to translate that to deck squares and tons I can get it to about 1500 tons. 56 tons of that is in the engineering area. Because of the bridge size at 20 tons I don’t want to go over 1000. That gives me drives KEK for J3M1P3. Also I get quarters for a 3rd Engineer and a boat pilot plus 10 hard points and 8 additional crew quarters. I wanted to include a dock for the shuttle but that didn’t work for me.

Working from the side view is a little problematic for me so I am more comfortable with the 800 ton solution. It also has problems because it is an engineer short. I also think that a ship used in a criminal enterprise should probably be armed even if only to protect it from other criminals. I also would be happier if the shuttle could also be transported with the ship and I might try a J2 version to attempt to accomplish this.

I am trying to break this down too many ways

The J3 version is 1000 tons Drives QEE (77rules). It requires 3 engineers. It has space for a boat pilot as well as the extra engineer and eight additional crewmen. I also allotted 10 hard points. The KEK version was an attempt to get the shuttle on board with 81 rules (it didn’t work).

Class name for ship

Just a question, did #1 give the Class name for the"Solar Flare"?
The reason for the question is that in #3 the index lists Starship Files: Star Class Armored Merchant and was wondering if this was the ship in question.

I got this off the Traveller Wiki. I unfortunately do not have any of the High Passage :(.

Hoping for stats and plans either way.

Nope, different ship.
