Solomani Rim Materials...

Children of Earth by Harold Hale has some thoughtful insights - if you don't mind marginalia. Essentially, the Rim is more James Bond type frontier. Border is tight. So doing it as Technothriller or Spy Novel genre - you can't go wrong if you pick up some of the sources from there. Just remember the Confederation are notNazis but as I and others have argued - Swiss in jackboots and if you have ever visited the Switzerland - you would agree. At the very least, it ought be as tolerant/intolerant as post Revolutionary America.

So they are calvinist, chocolate eating yodelers? My family is from Salzburg, I'm fairly conversant with the area, I don't see it, the Swiss just seem like Swiss to me.

The whole "Champions of Human Supremacy" thing will play them as neo-nazi/racist types though in American culture. I change that IMTU, though it seems weird to call them Swiss.

Ok, here we go again.

The Solomani are a proud people with a rich diverse set of traditions that bind them under a single government. They resent tyranny and call themselves a confederation. However, underlying the structures of their democracy lies a powerful idea (the Solomani Cause) akin to the compact of five in the Federal Council. Each world contributes to a pooled Army, Navy, SolSec which akin to the Swiss army of old. As you go through those mountain passes ever notice how many tanks stand guard?

The Democracy that the Swiss and the Solomani are both so proud of leads to consider economic freedom and almost a laissez faire type society but underneath lies the need for order hence the multiple permits and visas needed for the conducting of business. Both are relatively stable although centrifugal forces by neighboring states continuously pull at them but yet remain having a constant identity - Swiss or Solomani.

Strongly individualistic and anti-collectivist yet bind themselves into a common project. Very weak central government but enforced by strong institutions.

Starting to sound like the Solomani to you now.

Oh, yeah, the Solomani brought chocolate addiction to the Stars.

There was also an Amber Zone in JTAS (around issue #18 or so) set around a missing Leviathan class ship in (I think) Banasdan.

Just saw this, yes, as you describe them I can see similarities, though to be honest, that's not how I read the solomani. I am going to read AM 6 again I guess. They just didn't seem all that democratic in my book.

best regards,

I should have noticed this and posted earlier. I made a long list of references when researching Terran Dawn (Solomani Rim material, different era). I put it in PDF and its available here. There is a table at the end that lists references to specific materials by publication and page number. You will have to ignore the references to Terran Dawn.

I'd forgotten all about those TDs. I just hauled them out and had a look-through.

#13 has an adventure set on Terra in 1108. There's some information about conditions there, but very little historical information. There's also a big writeup of Dolphins, a two-page adventure set on Peraspera (Solomani Rim 2028), and a four-page writeup of Terra system plus a map of Terra. Finally one page of library data with entries about Boskone (1214), Hamilcar (1738), Ishimshulgi (2021), Noricum (2918), and Weipu (0719).

#14 has a a four-page writeup of the Ptolemy System (0639) plus a map and a one-page adventure set there.
