some robots

flykiller

SOC-14 5K
for some decades glisten has held robotics design contests of varying mission objectives. one of the most popular entry fields was artificial animal programming and for a few years rats drew large interest in both the programmers and the spectators who linked in to see how realistic a robotic rat could be. in later contests the drive was towards cartoon-like characters rather than real animal behavior - one winning entry performed a dancing routine with a cane and tophat. many of the contest winners (and some that didn't win but proved popular anyway) were mass-manufactured as childrens' toys. in most of these toys the ability to update or alter the program was disabled, but in some of these that step was not taken or could be bypassed. in addition many of these toys were manufactured not with new cpu's and memory boards, but recycled ones, some of them very powerful. further, many contest entries had no reprogramming safeguards at all and deliberately used very high-end hardware. some of these ended up lost or passed on at random.

arby the roborat is a (rich) childrens' toy, programmed to act like a real pet rat, friendly and personable. he will key-in on an owner, "recognizing" him as such, "squeeking" to communicate, and will respond to calls to come. if his owner disappears he will "mope" for several days and then seek a new owner. all of his motor routines are autonomous and located on-board. in addition he has many non-rat routines - he will follow simple verbal instructions, he likes to play roll-the-ball, and if any girls or women jump up on a table and scream on seeing him he will find a small platform, climb up on it, and start waving his paws and squeeking in mockery of them. he also senses and maintains his own power levels, and will plug himself in if provided with the necessary outlet and plug. if damaged he will announce this (the only time he speaks) and will keep announcing it until someone rescues and tends him, or he runs out of power.

arby is mostly stainless steel, very closely resembles a real rat, and is highly articulated and very flexible. he has rubber footpads allowing him nearly noiseless walking and the ability to keep his footing on sloped surfaces. he has human-level vision, rat-level hearing, rat-level touch with his whiskers, basic touch-awareness over the rest of his structure, and a rat-level olfactory capability (and he uses his sense of smell to recognize his "owner"). he has short-range comms and can transmit all of his data, allowing his status and phsical pose and sensory input to be displayed on a computer screen. he also has a physical jack for recharging and for physical data transfer and program access.

if arby's memory is not burned in and extra memory is available then his programs may be altered or supplemented with further instructions. sometimes even if his regular routines are burned in the rest of his memory is available and can access his motor routines, thus it may be possible to give him a "split personality". he makes a great jump project for a programmer.

arby's structure is a tech 15 machine, a product of glisten's advanced maufacturing capability. those with robotics skill level 1 have little hope of successfully working on him and stand some chance of damaging him, level 2 has good chance of successful work and little chance of damage, and level 3 is fully competent to work on him. for mechanical skill add one skill level to achieve the same results. arby's cpu and memory may be anything at all, from tech 11 on up, and the memory may be of any capacity at all. programmers of any level may make an attempt to alter or supplement his programming with normal chances of success/failure/damage.

comm range typically is 100 yards under good conditions. time to recharge under normal loading conditions is usually around 12 hours and takes 0.5 hours. weight is about half a pound.

(no, arby cannot be rigged to carry lasers or emit sonic death blasts. he's a toy, not a weapon.)

This is great, flykiller. Did you have a price?

Also, I have one hitch. You indicate that the CPU and memory "may be anything at all," from TL11 up, but Arby was, I think you imply, one of the mass-produced spin-offs of the robotics contests. Presumably it came with standard hardware, into which the standard software came loaded.

Maybe this was a legacy TL14 CPU and memory for some small device, but Arby was provided with accessible physical architecture and upgrade space, for the aging child turned hobbyist to customize?

I can certainly fill in the blanks myself, but since Arby is your creation, so I would like to have you views to complete the picture.

no price, price will be too game-specific to have any meaning.

yes, most of them do come with standard hardware, but "standard" may include contractor-supplied chips, and who knows where they get those. some arby's will be hacked, some chips and memory will be recycled and have default or pre-existing programming located somewhere on them, and some will have been hand-made for the contests and do ... well, who knows what they'll do. so, when the player characters find an arby, they don't always know what they're getting ....

as for completing the picture, that's best left up to the game referee. as I've said before, anyone able to play traveller is able to play it their own way, and most do.

the p series of robots, manufactured by 2nd hand industries of palique, has come to dominate the ordinary civilian comercial robot business throughout the spinward marches. a century of manufacturing experience and aggressive marketing and insider contracting and, above all, customer satisfaction, has given 2nd hand the upper hand even in competition with the admittedly superior robots of glisten.

the p2 masses at about 120 lbs and dimensions at 3.5 ft long, 2.5 ft wide, and 1.5 feet high. its basic shape is two oblong concave plates almost joined together at the edges, with its various sensor equipments mounted inside the leading, and sometimes on the trailing, edges. it has heavy duty skin for rough encounters - it can withstand a few blows from a baseball bat - but is not armored. it is watertight and can withstand any deluge but is not waterproof and is not capable of submerged operations. it is insulated making it resistant to harsh climate condtions but has no active temperature control. a central pop-up turret rotor bowl, capacity of 20 lbs dynamic, is mounted in the top center, and appendages when present are mounted inside the port and starboard edges. anti-grav drives can propel it at standard speeds up to 70 mph with no altitude limit and provide stability sufficient for appendage use and light weapons recoil. operational endurance is 26 hours continuous before refueling is required - power plant output is fixed and neither components nor workload have any bearing on fuel consumption. power supplied is sufficient for human-speed operation of the turret rotor and any appendages. brain capacity (in book 2 terms) is basic i/o/ops plus 5 units. these are expert systems, not ai's (though there is some question ... tabloid speculation mostly).

above basic, the standard i/o configuration present in every p2 is human sight, human hearing, human voice, and standard radio/jack comms. beyond this there are two popular component configurations.

the first is the standard servant configuration. this usually leaves the turret un-utilized and adds only a pair of human arms capable of 25 lbs dynamic loading each, enabling the p2 easily to lift 50 lbs. this has proven more than sufficient for most servant tasking such as lab and medical assistants, stewards and concierges, and light cargo handlers. while this configuration leaves room and lift capactiy for other components these seldom are present as they add cost but seldom capability in servant tasking.

the second is the standard security configuration. the turret bowl is mounted with a light weapon, typically a .22 caliber automatic gun with a rof of 10/sec and a magazine of 1000 cartridges. other systems may be mounted but must supply any extra power required (such as for lasers). two light rod appendages are mounted, capable of 10 lbs of dynamic load. their primary designed purpose is to mount light specialty tools, but on patrol their usual use is to operate access hatches and security keypads. in addition these almost always include significant i/o upgrades including bullhorn voice, enhanced sight, enhanced hearing, ultrasonic hearing, night vision, ir vision, and an advanced secure comm system. this puts the p2 at the limit of its space and loading capacities.

while these two configurations are the most popular there are many others. light construction welders, remote survey and maintenance, search and rescue, and many other applications add specialty tools to the turret and/or appendages as necessary to perform programmed work.

The most common robot IMTU is the Ottobot, basically a CPU box with a full sensor set but no appendages and very limited power supply, it just basically plugs in and drives/operates machinery with X skill level, whether vehicles, factory or construction/cargo frames, a low end version of the Ship's Robot. It's TL10 so it isn't very smart, just enough to have a driver or one shot skill set under close human supervision.

The second most common robot is the remotely controlled drone particularly for Ship's Robot or Factory's Robot server, about the same form factor as your common bot, typically with grav modules, medium arms and special EVA/tool sets for specific situations and roles.

continuing the p series of bots by 2nd Hand Industries of palique.

the p1 masses 60 lbs, motivates with anti-grav, and is about the size and shape of a small flattened beach ball. it has no manipulators. it has heavy duty skin, is splash proof (but not watertight), and has active temperature control allowing it to function fully in hot or snow-and-ice conditions. in addition to basic i/o/ops it has enhanced vision, night vision, human-level hearing, human voice, and advanced secure comms. it also has a visible-light illuminator. endurance is 26 hours.

the brain is an expert system, not an a.i., and (in ct terms) has a capacity of 8 slots. 6 are usually occupied by event recognition (1), random terrain traversal (2), human interaction (1), mission assignment (1), and avatar (1). the remaining slots are taken up by either advanced mission assignment (2) or advanced human interaction (2).

the primary mission set for the p1 is visual and auditory observation. it can be found inspecting power lines and sewers for infrastructure agencies, watching wildlife for biologists, and keeping an eye on remote locations for coast guards and security agencies. its most visible use is by news-gathering agencies, especially the Glisten Galactic News Service (which, while it has available a large contingent of superior tech 15 newsbots built by Real Persons Industries of glisten, also maintains a large fleet of much cheaper but almost as effective p1's throughout the spinward marches). whenever a news event of any kind is happening you can count on a ggns p1 buzzing up and loudly announcing, "sir, this is a terrible tragedy, can you tell ggns and our viewers what is happening here! the imperium is watching!" more than one newsbot has been shot out of the sky after this rude but signature debut by ggns - another reason why ggns uses the cheaper p1's so often ....

p1's also are used to deliver data packets, including verbal messages, when comm links are unavailable, overloaded, compromised, or otherwise not preferred. in high-level law worlds where all comms are monitored this use of the p1 is illegal and the p1's physical data port jack will be removed and the voice i/o be tied directly to the comm system. usually.

the avatar program allows a remote user to access and control the bot while the bot's autonomous and other programming works around the input. for example if a remote user guides the bot closer to a power line to personally inspect it the bot's auto-stability programs continue to function around this guidance.
