Spinward Marches Campaign

Are the 'Spinward Marches Campaign' and Supplement 3 'The Spinward Marches' two seperate books? I have Supplement 3 and it briefly details the Spinward sectors and nothing more. No ships, no Fifth Frontier War or anything else that has been mentioned.

Intrigued,

Crow

Yes, the SMC came out when Trav switched to the 8.5x11 format. It reprints some of the info from Citizens of the Imperium, and adds other info. There is a complete history of the FFW. And, there is an adventure that takes place right at the end of the FFW (characters are mustering out of service, having just served in the war).

This came out about the same time as the Aliens modules, and its in the same format.

Yes, SMC and S:3 are completely different (and, as Bill mentions, include several discrepancies).

However, this specific book is why I am so completely disappointed in FFE. FFE mananged to reprint almost the whole CT line, then stopped one* book short of the goal. WTF?

The Reprints module was to include SMC, the Atlas, Tarsus, Beltstrike, and Alien Realms. It would have been a very useful and helpful reprint. But instead, it will never appear.

That would have been a very nice book to get.

[*] The only other CT item missing is The Traveller Adventure, but it had never been promised. It had been discussed as a possible hardback with The Traveller Book, but it was never announced as such.

For the longest time The Spinward Marches Campaign was my favorite Traveller product. However, I would not pay the prices routinely quoted for it on eBay.

Wow, I see what you mean. I picked one out a while back for a reasonable price, but I see there is one now going for over $30...

SMC OTOH gives us the 214th with all it's splendor and warts. We know how many fighters are supposed to be available. Ditto the number of P.F. Sloans. Ditto couriers. The individual designs may be broken but we get to see how all the pieces fit together.
Unfortunately, the 214th is either a mislabled CruRon or an extremely atypical BatRon[*]. It certainly costs about the same as a squadron of cruisers, and if it can go toe to toe with a squadron of battleships, then battleriders are so superior value for money that no sane government would invest in anything else.

The fighting elements of the 214th are seven 20,000 T ships. They have the advantage of not having to lug around 40% fuel and 5% jump drive, so ton for ton they're going to be tougher than battleships. But the smallest battleship is ten times bigger (and costs about five times more)!

[*] Please note: There's no need to tell me that you are convinced that the writers meant it to be a BatRon. I'm perfect sure they did, myself. I just think they made a mistake.

That's just crazy.

I mean, SMC has some cool bits, but not seventy-plus bucks worth! The buyer's gotta be a completist collector or something.
