Starship Maintenance

SOC-1
Greetings.

In20 there seems to be some confusion on what the maintenance costs are for a starship but I don't see anything in the errata about it:

The book states that annual maintenance costs 0.01% (1/1000th) the original (new) cost.

Unfortunately, 0.01% != 1/1,000. 0.01% = 1/10,000.

Also, what is the original (new) cost? The total of the components or the 20% discounted?

Finally, the book states that with regular monthly maintenance, the annual maintenance is reduced by up to 50% and that (Annual x 0.5) + (Monthly x10) is less than Annual. I can't seem to get this math to work either. It seems that the monthly maintenance (0.0025%) more than doubles the total maintenance costs.

Anybody have an errata that explains the mistakes here?

Thanks

Welcome aboard Yinkin :D

And a good catch. I seem to recall it being noted way back but guess it didn't make it into the errata files.

The annual maintenance should be 0.1% (or 1/1,00th) of the new (pre-discount) cost of the ship (including weapons but not ammunition imo).

The routine maintenance formula only seems to work out to the 20% savings if you "purchase" it as a package of 12 units (1 per month), though (as noted) you are allowed to skip 2 units and still get the full benefit.

Therefore what I've come up with for my game is making it a combination of maintenace and repair parts and tools totalling 12 units. Each unit is good for one monthly maintenance attempt (the Engineer may fail and need to use up another unit) or a single damage repair attempt. The units fit within the ship's lockers but must be purchased seperately, at 0.0025% per unit, typically at the time of the annual maintenance. Extra units could be purchased but would require storing in cargo volume (how much space? imtu it's based on the bridge size, I think my current calculation is 10% of bridge volume is the ship's maintenance lockers).

A generous referee might allow a discount for purchasing the full routine maintenance package, I'd say 20% off, but perhaps only with the annual maintenance program purchase.

Naturally the units are specific to the class of ship and using units for another class would impose a severe penalty on the check. Such as in cases where PC's are scrounging parts from other ships.

Off the top of my head isn't the routinely maintained cost 0.075% of new cost?

Annual (without routine) = 1/1000 * buy cost
Routine = 1/40,000 * buy cost
Annual (with routine) = 1/2000 * buy cost

Or in other words 0.1%, 0.0025% and 0.05%.

As in everything else these are just approximations. I tend to just use 0.1% regardless for the yearly maintenance cost, the extra is spent on beer. This allows the simple
Ship costs 40 GCr, yearly maintenance is 40 MCr type math.

Beer is necessary for both monthly and annual maintenance, just ask any engineer!

I have a2 trader excell sheet which creates your monthly, yearly, and by jump payment if anyone wants it.

jasper!

I was just looking into all the documents a tramp freighter would need when I read that last message.

So yes, please post it, link it or send it to me via the Private Message option. Thanks.
